Faithful Celebrate the Stigmatization of St. Francis of Assisi in Donsol Fiesta Mass

Donsol, Sorsogon – September 17, 2025

The Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Francis of Assisi in Donsol, Sorsogon, marked its fiesta with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in honor of the Stigmatization of St. Francis of Assisi.

This year’s theme, “San Francisco: kaiba sa sarabay na pagbaklay bilang mga peregrino nin paglaom sa gabos na linalang” (St. Francis: journeying together as pilgrims of hope for all creation), highlighted the saint’s enduring witness of faith and compassion for all.

The Fiesta Mass was presided over by Br. Lino Gregorio Redoblado, OFM, joined by friars and priests from nearby parishes who concelebrated the liturgy. Their collective presence reflected the strong sense of fraternity inspired by St. Francis’ life and example.

In his thanksgiving message, Br. Kristern Keith Manaig, OFM, Shrine Rector, extended heartfelt gratitude to the parish community for their dedication and active involvement. He emphasized that the success of the fiesta was made possible through the shared commitment of the faithful, who continue to live out the Franciscan spirit of service and unity.

The annual celebration of the Stigmatization of St. Francis not only deepens devotion to the parish’s patron but also serves as a reminder of the saint’s profound encounter with Christ, which continues to inspire hope and renewal among devotees in Donsol and beyond.

Young Franciscans in Asia Gather in South Korea, Renew Commitment as Pilgrims of Hope

Seoul, South Korea – September 13, 2025.
Sixteen young friars from the East Asia Conference (EAC), representing the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, concluded the Young Friars Gathering 2025 with a resounding call to live as pilgrims of hope for the Church and the world.

The gathering, held from September 4–13, 2025 in the Province of the Holy Korean Martyrs, coincided with the Jubilee Year of Hope and the 800th anniversary of the Canticle of the Creatures, drawing inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi’s vision of fraternity and mission.

From their arrival at the Blessed Korean Martyrs Retreat House in Seoul, the friars were immersed in the faith and culture of Korea. The program opened with a Eucharistic celebration presided by Br. John Wong, OFM, General Definitor, followed by orientation and fellowship that quickly transformed strangers into brothers. Over the following days, the friars journeyed through Seoul, Daejeon, Jangseong, Sancheong, Incheon, and Haemi, visiting shrines, novitiates, nursing homes, and parish communities. At every stop, they witnessed the living expression of Franciscan life: the courage of martyrs, the vitality of novices, and the dedication of friars serving the elderly and marginalized.

Talks and reflections enriched the week-long encounter. Br. Judee Mar Maquinad, OFM, spoke on the challenges and hopes of young friars in Asia; Br. Lino Gregorio Redoblado, OFM, highlighted the realities and prospects of the Order; while Br. Moses Kim, OFM, offered insights on the Canticle of the Creatures as a call to ecological conversion. A moving visit to the Sancheong Leprosarium, together with Br. Damian Park, OFM’s reflection on the Jubilee Year of Hope, reminded participants that vulnerability is not weakness, but a sacred space of encounter with God and others.

Beyond formal sessions, cultural nights, shared meals, and moments of recreation deepened fraternity, embodying the simplicity and joy central to Franciscan life.

At the close of their journey, the friars issued a final statement affirming that “fraternity is not bound by geography but animated by the Spirit, who makes us one.” They resolved to:
• deepen inter-provincial collaboration,
• live ecological conversion daily,
• embody prophetic fraternity with the poor and marginalized,
• foster dialogue and peacebuilding across cultures,
• commit to ongoing formation and mutual support, and
• proclaim the Gospel with joy and creativity.

The closing Eucharist, presided by Fr. Joseph Kim, OFM, Minister Provincial of Korea, was marked with deep gratitude to the Korean friars, the EAC leadership, and the people of South Korea who opened their homes and hearts. With renewed zeal, the young friars pledged to return to their provinces as brothers to all, defenders of creation, companions of the poor, and witnesses of hope.

Quoting their Seraphic Father, they concluded:

“Let us begin again, for up to now we have done little.”

In communion with the universal Church, the young Franciscans of Asia now continue their journey — from praise to mission — as pilgrims of hope toward a renewed creation.

Franciscans Join Benedictines in Celebrating 130 Years of Presence in the Philippines

Manila, Philippines – September 12, 2025

The Franciscan friars joined the Benedictine community in commemorating the 130th anniversary of their presence in Manila and in the Philippines. The solemn Eucharistic celebration was held at the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, Manila, with His Eminence Jose F. Cardinal Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, as the presider.

In his homily, Cardinal Advincula reminded the faithful of the gift of the Benedictine charism in the life of the Church and society. “May your life of stability and hospitality offer development and justice to the needy. May your prayers and liturgy uplift the hearts of the downtrodden. May your community and fraternity translate into solidarity and charity in society. Let us open our hearts to God’s invitation for us to be of greater service and self-donation. A generous heart is a joyful heart,” he said.

Addressing the Benedictine family, the Cardinal added, “As you rejoice today, may your joy be marked by gratitude and generosity. Thank you for all the goodness that you bring to the life of our Church and society. And may our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Montserrat, guide us and pray for us all.”

The Franciscan delegation, headed by Fr. Lino Gregorio Redoblado, OFM, expressed their solidarity and fraternal support to the Benedictines on this milestone celebration. Their presence highlighted the bonds of communion between the religious families serving the local Church in the Philippines.
