Today’s Gospel Matthew 16:13–23

Reflection
In this Gospel passage, Jesus entrusts to Peter the foundation of His Church. He says, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” This powerful declaration reveals the divine authority given to Peter, the first Pope, and the beginning of the visible Church on earth. Jesus also promises that evil will never overcome His Church because it is founded not on human power, but on the truth of Christ Himself.

Moreover, Jesus entrusts Peter with the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, symbolizing spiritual authority and responsibility. This is not only a moment of commissioning, but also of divine trust. God choosing a humble fisherman to lead His flock.

However, in the same passage, Jesus begins to speak of His future suffering: that the Son of Man must suffer greatly, be rejected, killed, and rise on the third day. When Peter objects out of concern, Jesus rebukes him, saying, “Get behind me, Satan!” This reveals an important lesson: even sincere intentions can become stumbling blocks when they oppose God’s will.

This Gospel challenges me to reflect on the Church’s divine origin and my own response to God’s plans. Jesus founded only one Church, and it stands strong despite persecution, scandals, and human failure not because of us, but because Christ remains at its center.

Peter’s story also reminds me that God can use imperfect people for His perfect mission. Even though Peter misunderstood Jesus at times, Jesus still chose him. In moments when I feel unworthy or afraid, I find hope in Peter’s journey from failure to faithfulness.

Lastly, I’m reminded to trust God’s plan, even when it includes suffering. Like Peter, I may sometimes resist the cross, but Jesus calls me to follow Him not just in glory but also in sacrifice.

My Reflection for today’s gospel
Mt 14:1-12

Sometimes, the truth will cost us. It may cost us comfort, relationships, popularity or even safety. But silence in the face of sin is not holiness. It is fear disguised as peace.

Gospel reading today
Mt 14:1-12
Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him."
Now Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. His disciples came and took away the co**se and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

My Reflection for today’s gospel reading
Matthew 13:54-58

In today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to His hometown, a place filled with familiarity yet ironically, also rejection. The people who knew Him as a child, who saw Him grow up, could not accept the wisdom and power now revealed through Him. Instead of awe, they responded with suspicion. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” they asked, their hearts closed by familiarity and pride.

Jesus responds with words that ring through generations:

“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.”

How often do we do the same? We sometimes dismiss God’s work simply because it comes from someone we think we “already know” a family member, a quiet neighbor, or even our own self. We limit God because we expect Him to act only in extraordinary ways, not through the ordinary faces we see every day.

My Gospel reflection for today’s reading

Matthew 13:47-53

This parable reminds us that while God’s invitation is open to everyone, not everyone will respond with a heart that’s willing to be transformed. We are all “caught” in the net of God’s mercy and grace, but we’re also called to examine how we live our lives. Are we truly following Christ? Are we allowing His Word to shape our choices, our character, and how we treat others?

Jesus ends this teaching with a question: “Do you understand all these things?” The disciples say yes
