𝘌𝘝𝘈𝘕𝘎𝘌𝘓𝘐𝘖𝘕 CREATOR HIDEAKI ANNO SAYS THAT USING GENERATIVE A.I. CAN BE "ACCEPTABLE".
In a recent interview by 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘦𝘴 𝘑𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘯, when asked on what are his thoughts on the impact of A.I. in the movie industry, Hideaki Anno deemed that it may be acceptable at this rate, because it already exists.
He notes that, at this point, AI has become advanced enough that viewers may not be able to distinguish a script written by AI to someone written by an actual human. Thus, since AI right now can do some things in art that human can do as well, it might be acceptable in some cases to let AI take over some human jobs.
However, he still notes that, while AI may evolve to a point that it can generate complete visuals in just a few clicks, it will never have the artistic judgement that a human creator can have. He also states the importance of having rules in AI creations so that it doesn't infringe any copyright.
Anno cites Toho and its 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘻𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢 franchise as an example. If Toho were to train an AI model exclusively on its own decades-spanning library of 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘻𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢 footage to generate a new feature film, no one would complain, and copyright claims are null. It 𝘪𝘴 Toho's property, after all.
Takashi Yamazaki, the director of 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘻𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢: 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘖𝘯𝘦, also supported Anno's stance in the same interview, noting that the reception of generative AI today is the same when using CGI is anime productions is still quite new: People have a negative reception over it. Howerver, he also adds that creating high-quality art with AI alone is still very difficult at this time, noting that even CGI artists back then have to put up a lot of time and effort to refine the final product before it is good enough for everyone to see.
