We are honored to welcome Claire Lai to , where she will accept the DW Freedom of Speech Award on behalf of her father, Jimmy Lai.

This year, Deutsche Welle recognizes Jimmy Lai, a publisher, pro-democracy advocate, and steadfast defender of press freedom in Hong Kong. Despite mounting pressure, he has remained a powerful symbol in the fight for independent journalism. Earlier this year, a Hong Kong court sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

The Freedom of Speech Award ceremony is a long-standing tradition at our conference. It is a reminder of our shared responsibility to defend freedom of expression and to support those who risk everything to uphold it.

➑️ Join us on June 23, Day 1 of , as we honor Jimmy Lai, his legacy, and the courage of journalists and media advocates worldwide.

How free – and how safe – is journalism in Europe today? πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

Europe remains one of the safest regions for journalists. Yet, as Renate Schroeder, Director of the European Federation of Journalists - EFJ, has pointed out, the situation has steadily worsened since 2016, with more attacks on independent media, growing pressure on journalists, and increasing political smear campaigns.

Against this backdrop, key questions emerge around the role of the EU's European Media Freedom Act and the EU's position in addressing platform dominance. πŸ’¬ We'll explore these topics with her at .

Renate has been with EFJ since 2003, leading advocacy at EU and Council of Europe level, representing the organization internationally, and contributing to expert groups, missions and juries. She is also part of the team behind Voices - European Festival of Journalism and Media Freedom, of which the EFJ is a major partner and DW a co-organizer.

She will join on June 23 for the panel "Regulating the feed: How governance shapes news on social media."
