The International Criminal Court (ICC) has directed another medical assessment of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Duterte’s legal team requested the procedure, citing that his condition continues to deteriorate at age 81.

Ex president Duterte faces crimes against humanity charges related to his administration’s drug war, which led to thousands of deaths.

ICC proceedings are scheduled to begin in November 2026.

In January, the ICC pre‑trial chamber had found Duterte fit to participate in pre‑trial proceedings.

The court emphasized that if an accused cannot exercise their rights due to ill health, the trial cannot be fair and must be adjourned until the issue is resolved.

Ang tunay na demokrasya ay nagsisimula sa pananagutan.

Hindi angkop na ang lugar kung saan ginagawa ang batas ay maging "sanctuario" o taguan ng mga umiiwas sa hustisya. Ang Senado ay para sa paglilingkod sa taong-bayan, hindi para sa proteksyon ng iilan.

Kapag ang mga makapangyarihan ay binibigyan ng "exceptions" habang ang ordinaryong mamamayan ay agad na napaparusahan, unti-unting namamatay ang tiwala ng publiko sa ating sistema.

Lokal na warrant man o international summons, dapat itong harapin nang may tapang at integridad. Hindi pwedeng "selective" ang hustisya. Ang tunay na lider ay nakikipagtulungan sa batas, hindi nagiging balakid dito.

The law is the law. Walang sanctuary. Walang exceptions. Dahil kung walang pananagutan, walang tunay na demokrasya.
