Making way for the construction of the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Metro Manila Subway Project, Razon-led East Zone concessionaire Manila Water Co. Inc. announced it has successfully relocated its key pipeline in Quezon City during the first half of 2025.

In a statement on Friday, July 18, Manila Water said it began relocation works for its waterline to help facilitate the construction of the subway’s Anonas Station through an open-cut excavation and installation of the 100-millimeter diameter high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline. The new line spans approximately 330 linear meters along the streets of J. Bugallon, F. Castillo, and E. Evangelista.

The reversal of the Philippines’ balance of payments (BOP) position to a surplus in June brought down the country’s BOP deficit by 3.5 percent to $5.6 billion in the first six months of 2025.

Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed that the BOP, which reflects the country’s transactions with the rest of the world, narrowed in the January-to-June period from the wider $5.8-billion deficit a year ago.

Despite hitting its first-half collection target of ₱1.5 trillion and even modestly exceeding it, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) hinted at the possibility of downscaling its full-year ₱3.2 trillion target, as the country’s main tax collection agency may fall short of it.

“I think there might be a recalibration of the goal, again, considering that the assumption is not going to happen. So if we use the formula for arriving at the right collection target, it should be recalibrated,” BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said in an interview with Bilyonaryo News on Thursday, July 17.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) continued to weaken on Thursday, July 17, as investors worried about US President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs and reports of his plan to change leadership at the US Federal Reserve.

The main index lost 41.93 points, or 0.66 percent, to close at 6,295.55. Mining stocks led the retreat, which was felt across the board. Trading volume was firm at 2.41 billion shares valued at P7.33 billion. Losers outnumbered gainers 112 to 75, with 56 unchanged.

State-run Social Security System (SSS) has acquired a 6.37 percent stake in real estate firm Century Properties Group Inc. from the Antonio family for ₱500 million.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, CPG said its majority shareholder Century Properties Inc. has sold a total of 740.74 million CPG common shares via a special block sale on Thursday, July 17, 2025. The firm said SSS acquired the block of shares at ₱0.675 per share, a five percent discount to CPG’s market price of ₱0.71 per share.

After receiving zero subsidies this year, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhillHealth) will be getting ₱53.3 billion in government support next year, according to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s chief economic manager.

Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Ralph G. Recto told reporters during an informal press chat on Thursday, July 17, 2025, that the government will resume its subsidies for the state health insurer. Meanwhile, Recto said that there are “no plans for additional contributions” because “there’s so much money with PhilHealth.”

The peso ended the week a bit stronger than the United States (US) dollar, closing at ₱57.145 on Friday, July 18, from ₱57.29 last Thursday.

According to the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), the local currency hit an intraday high of ₱57.065 and a low of ₱57.255 after opening at ₱57.25.

Total trading volume dropped to $1.309 billion from Thursday’s $1.928 billion.

“Asian currencies have come under pressure amid an incipient rebound in the US dollar, driven by renewed market focus on tariffs,” MUFG Global Markets Research senior currency analyst Lloyd Chan said.
