NATIONAL | Before the official start of the campaign period for national candidates in the May 2025 midterm elections tomorrow, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reminded all senatorial candidates and party-list groups to voluntarily remove any illegal campaign materials.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia emphasized that the commission will strictly enforce laws against illegal posters and will file criminal charges against violators.

"Starting February 11, they will no longer be aspirants, but candidates. Because of this, we will enforce election laws, particularly regarding posters and campaigning," Garcia said in Filipino during a radio interview yesterday.
According to Comelec regulations, all prohibited election propaganda must be removed by the candidate or party at least 72 hours before the campaign period begins.
Garcia also announced that Comelec will launch "Oplan Baklas" at the start of the campaign period to remove campaign materials illegally placed on trees, footbridges, electric posts, and other public spaces. However, he clarified that Comelec cannot remove materials from private properties due to a Supreme Court ruling.
Additionally, Garcia stated that candidates are allowed up to 120 minutes of television ads and 180 minutes of radio ads during the 90-day campaign period.

The campaign period for local candidates running for positions such as regional, provincial, city, and municipal offices, and for the House of Representatives will begin on March 28 and end on May 10.
