“Margaha” is a local term called by the residents to the 1-kilometer black sand coastline of Barangay Old Sagay in Sagay City. The locals believe that the black sand has healing properties, thus an expression “itom nga balas, bulong sa lawas” are often heard in the community.
The Margaha coastline is fronting the 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve, overlooking the Panal, Macahulom, and Carbin Reefs, as well as the Suyac mangrove island. Also, Margaha owes its name to resident and artist, Nunelucio Alvarado. Thus, the area is considered as one of the important heritage of Sagay City.
Art Epicenter
The Margaha coastline has become the epicenter of arts and culture movement in the city, where Alvarado established his “Atalyer” or his art studio and painted his recent “Nawong” and “Palagpat” series, the and the local arts group “Syano Artlink”.
Margaha is also the seat of his bamboo art gallery and coffee shop, “Kape Albarako”, where local artists gather and display their works that ultimately became a tourist spot in Sagay. In this area also stands the “Haligi” installation art of Alvarado that depicts the seven foundations of art, as well as Sagaynon’s resilience after typhoon Yolanda that struck the city.
Margaha’s host barangay, Old Sagay, and the city government also partnered with Alvarado and his group to paint the house facades along the road going to the black sand beach. This project called “Painted Matters” incorporates the loud and vibrant Filipino colors according to Alvarado.
With this development in the Sagaynon art movement, Margaha has been the venue for several arts and cultural events in Sagay, like the annual Arts Month, and art workshops, and the Tourism Month.
The Margaha Film Festival
The Margaha Film Festival is the first of its kind in Sagay City that encourages all homegrown writers and directors to create a film depicting the Sagaynon heritage and lifestyle through film. With the vision of making Sagay as the seat of arts and culture in North Negros, Margaha Film Festival is an event that inspires collaboration, ingenuity and artistry of the Negrenses.
