Have you ever seen this tiny snake? You can often spot this in your backyard, especially in moist soil or under pots and leaf litter.
The Brahminy blind snake (Indotyphlops braminus), also known as the flowerpot snake, is one of the smallest snakes in the world, usually measuring only 6–17 cm long and often mistaken for an earthworm because of its smooth, shiny scales and tiny eyes. Native to Asia and Africa but now found worldwide through transported soil and plants, this harmless species is remarkable because all individuals are female and reproduce without males through parthenogenesis. Living underground, it feeds mainly on ant and termite eggs, larvae, and pupae, making it a valuable natural pest controller. Its burrowing also helps aerate the soil, while it serves as prey for birds, frogs, and other predators—quietly playing an important role in maintaining ecological balance.
