โIf the adults are afraid of children, then the whole world is doomed." โ Teach You a Lesson
The gates creaked open, and students poured inโbackpacks slung over shoulders, laughter bouncing off concrete walls. This was supposed to be a place to learn, grow, and thrive. Everyone thought it was just another ordinary day.
Bang!
The sound cracked through the air like thunder. Voices died instantly.
โWas it a gunshot?โ someone whispered, trembling.
Panic erupted in seconds. The hallway, once loud and bright, dissolved into screams and scrambling feet. Teachers voices rose sharp and urgentโโGet down! Take cover! Move!โโbut fear drowned out every instruction. Doors slammed shut. Locks clicked fast. Students huddled in corners, hands clamped over mouths to muffle their breathing, hearts hammering so hard they felt loud enough to be heard.
The noise outside rose and fell: shouts, sirens wailing closer, footsteps pounding past. Inside the dark, quiet room, no one spoke. No one moved. Every second stretched long and thin. The school that felt like a safe harbor only hours before now felt like a cage.
When the all-clear finally came, it didnโt feel like victory. It felt like waking from a nightmare that hadnโt truly ended. Some things would never sound the same againโnot a slam, not a shout, not even the quiet of an empty hallway.
The question lingered long after the guns fell silent: If we cannot be safe where we learn, where will we ever be safe?
