Grammar, spelling lapses push year-long clinic for Samelistas
In response to the pressing results of the English Competency Week (ECW) held on September 4 and 5, the FELLAS’ grammar clinic will be extended into a year-long program, providing additional English grammar lessons to help Samelistas reach competitive standards.
Originally intended as fun competitions, two ECW contests turned into diagnostic tests when the results of the grammar and spelling events—including those of the winners—showed not at par performance, serving as the basis for continuing the remedial clinic.
In the quiz bee featuring basic verb tenses, the winning pair scored only 9 out of 30 points. Meanwhile, in the spelling contest, only one team managed to score slightly above half of the total 51 points.
“Of course, eye-opener din sa’tin yan [the results of the grammar bee and spelling bee]—na medyo ‘di pa rin fluent mga bata natin sa English. So, we still need to focus on grammar lessons,” English Coordinator and ECW proponent Janina Mae Malibiran said via Messenger.
Aside from tutorial sessions, she said grammar lessons will also be infused into language subjects in senior high school to ensure the continuity of the remediation initiative.
Moreover, Malibiran expressed optimism that the competitions conducted during the English Competency Week are still effective in encouraging Samelistas to promote and use the English language.
To accommodate more students in the next edition of ECW, the English coordinator also emphasized the club’s need for larger venues, more materials, and additional support.
Other than the written contests, the two-day celebration also featured verbal and art-inclined events like slogan making contest, tongue twister, and monologue/ declamation.
The results will be announced tomorrow.
In accordance with Provincial Ordinance No. 19, Series of 2022 by then Board Member Atty. Antonino Roman III, the first week of September is designated as English Competency Week to emphasize the importance of English proficiency and encourage Bataeños to develop effective communication skills.
