ICYMI: Candidates of the 46th University Student Council faced the student body in the Miting de Avance held yesterday, July 10 at the UP Manila Theatre.

The program featured segments that scrutinize candidates' backgrounds, revealing the latter's stances on local and national issues including those that concern UP Manila and the UP System and sentiments on their public affiliations.

This year’s Miting de Avance marked the first time in six years that the UPM USC chairperson race has two contenders.

Compared to last year, the theatre saw a higher turnout, with supporters filling the venue in red and yellow.

The voting period will run today until July 16.

2025 UPCD SC polls see revival of college party rivalries

UP College of Dentistry Student Council (UPCD SC) election will witness the revival of party rivalries within the college as political parties Coalition of Responsible & Empowered Students of the UP College of Dentistry (CREST) and newcomer PROXIMA fielded candidates for this year's college polls.

CREST nominee Shantel Maree Kasing and PROXIMA’s bet Isabella Louise Badon are vying for the chairpersonship, while Kasing’s running mate, Joseph Legaspi Jr., is set to rival Badon’s ticket mate, Charisse Calonge, for the position of vice chairperson for internal affairs.

Andrei Denise Palaganas under PROXIMA will run unopposed on her bid as vice chairperson for external affairs, while incumbent public relations officer and CREST nominee Angela Sophia B. Escaba is the lone candidate for the secretary post.

Catherine Iligan and Isabelle Dominique Ortega will both run unchallenged under CREST for auditor and College of Dentistry (CD) representative to the University Student Council, respectively.

PROXIMA’s Marc Dion D. Ramoso is the lone candidate for public relations officer.

UPDC College Electoral Board will accept candidacy protests until July 13, while the official campaign period will run from July 14-23. Miting de Avance and the official voting period will happen on July 18 and July 24-28, respectively.

To defund the universities is never just about numbers; it is about shrinking what a nation dares to imagine. The state knows this, and that is why its first strikes often land on campuses: through budget cuts, curriculum gutting, red-tagging, and control among others.

Yet, the universities remain undeterred and unyielding. Not because they are pure, but because they are practiced—in the rituals of resistance, in the long litany of truth-telling, and in the sacred duty to speak when others fall silent.

Universities must do more than speak. For the priesthood of the republic to remain credible, it must not only preach from the podium, but also descend into the streets, the margins, the lived struggle, where education goes beyond theory and oratory.

The call, then, is not only to resist—but to reflect, recalibrate, and recommit to standing with the people it claims to serve.
