40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF PEDRO CALUNGSOD'S EXISTENCE

On October 6, 1985, the beatification of Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores took place, during which Ricardo Cardinal Vidal of Cebu was informed about the existence of Pedro Calungsod.

Cardinal Vidal recounted that during the Synod of 1985, the Archbishop of Guam invited him to attend the beatification of Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, the priest Calungsod died with in 1672.

Then Guam Archbishop Felixberto Flores told Cardinal Vidal he would also give him "pertinent documents" about a "possible candidate" when he comes for the beatification. It was then that Cardinal Vidal would first read about the martyr from the Visayas who accompanied the Jesuit missionary.

With great joy and gratitude to Almighty God, the Diocese of Lucena wishes to share the blessed news that today, October 4, 2025, at 12:00 noon (Rome time), on the liturgical memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has officially announced the appointment of Rev. Fr. Edwin O. Panergo, currently the Rector of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Seminary, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Boac.

Rev. Fr. Edwin O. Panergo has served the Church with humility and pastoral zeal. His appointment recognizes his steadfast commitment to Christ’s mission and his love for the People of God. We offer our prayers and support as he prepares to shepherd the Diocese of Boac.

As we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Diocese of Lucena, which we joyfully marked last September 8, we recognize this episcopal appointment as a special blessing and grace from the Lord. In this season of thanksgiving, we express our deep gratitude for the many ways God continues to guide and bless our local Church. Truly, in our journey of 75 years, the Lord never ceases to show His goodness.

Let us together entrust Bishop-Elect Fr. Edwin O. Panergo to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the intercession of Saint Francis of Assisi, that he may faithfully lead the flock entrusted to him in the Diocese of Boac.

Further details regarding his Episcopal Ordination and Installation will be announced in due course.
