Air India Flight Crashes After Takeoff in Ahmedabad; Over 240 On Board
Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 — An Air India Boeing 787 aircraft en route to London crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Wednesday, carrying 244 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Flight AI171 lost contact with air traffic control just minutes after departure and disappeared from radar at an altitude of only 625 feet. The aircraft went down in the densely populated Meghani Nagar area, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and triggering a rapid emergency response.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities on site. The number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed.
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have launched a joint investigation. Air India and Boeing are fully cooperating with authorities.
Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assured the public that all necessary efforts are being made to support rescue operations and ensure full accountability.
