Avocados contain a toxin called PERSIN, which is a fatty acid derivative that's found in the leaves, skin, pit, and even the flesh of the fruit. While persin is generally not toxic to humans in moderate amounts, it can be highly toxic to many animals, including birds, rabbits, horses, and even some large animals like cattle. The sensitivity to persin varies among species, with birds being particularly vulnerable – even small amounts can cause respiratory distress, congestion, and even death. In dogs and cats, persin toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, though it's typically less severe than in birds. If you're a pet owner, it's best to keep avocado parts out of reach of your furry friends, and definitely don't feed them avocado intentionally. 🥑🥑🥑
