PAGPAG is a Filipino term that literally means "to shake off" or "to dust off." In the context of Filipino culture, pagpag refers to the practice of visiting an open space, like a restaurant or a friend's house, after attending a wake or burial to shake off the feeling of death and bad luck associated with it.

This tradition is deeply rooted in Filipino superstition and beliefs. Many Filipinos believe that death and mourning bring bad luck, and pagpag is a way to cleanse oneself of these negative energies. By going to a place with lots of people and food, individuals can shift their focus away from grief and death to more positive aspects of life.

Pagpag is also seen as a way to normalize life after a funeral, helping mourners transition back to their daily routines. It's not just about shaking off bad luck; it's also about finding comfort and support in the company of others.

In the Philippines, it's common for families to prepare food and drinks for visitors after a burial, and pagpag is an extension of this practice. The act of eating and socializing helps to dissipate the somber atmosphere of death, allowing people to reconnect and find solace in community.

UNDAS, also known as Araw Ng Mga Patay (Day of the Dead), is a significant traditional holiday in the Philippines, observed on November 1st and 2nd. It's a time when Filipinos honor and remember their deceased loved ones.

During Undas, families visit cemeteries, clean and decorate graves with flowers, candles, and food offerings. They often hold reunions, share meals, and pray for the souls of the departed. It's believed that the spirits of the dead return to visit their families, so food and other offerings are prepared for them.

Undas is rooted in Filipino culture and Catholic traditions. It's a celebration of life, death, and the connection between the living and the dead. Filipinos take this opportunity to pay respects, seek blessings, and strengthen family bonds. It's a unique and meaningful way to honor the deceased and find closure, comfort, and spiritual renewal.

To all those heading back to your provinces for UNDAS, have a safe travels! 🧡🧡🧡

Avocados contain a toxin called PERSIN, which is a fatty acid derivative that's found in the leaves, skin, pit, and even the flesh of the fruit. While persin is generally not toxic to humans in moderate amounts, it can be highly toxic to many animals, including birds, rabbits, horses, and even some large animals like cattle. The sensitivity to persin varies among species, with birds being particularly vulnerable – even small amounts can cause respiratory distress, congestion, and even death. In dogs and cats, persin toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, though it's typically less severe than in birds. If you're a pet owner, it's best to keep avocado parts out of reach of your furry friends, and definitely don't feed them avocado intentionally. 🥑🥑🥑

NUTRITIOUS NIBBLES

Seed of the day: SQUASH SEEDS 🫘

Squash seeds have been a part of human diets for thousands of years. The seeds of various squash species, including pumpkins, acorn squash, and zucchini, were consumed by indigenous peoples, who recognized their nutritional value.

The nutritional profile of squash seeds is impressive. They're rich in protein, healthy fats, fiber, and various essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, and selenium. Squash seeds are also a good source of antioxidants and contain anti-inflammatory compounds.

In many traditional cuisines, squash seeds were and continue to be roasted, ground, or used as an ingredient in various dishes.

Will you be roasting squash seeds to make a spooky-tasty snack for Halloween? 🎃🎃🎃
