A recent case of a 3-year-old with multiple active cavities and a dental abscess is a sharp reminder of how critical early oral care really is. At this age, children can’t understand the value of healthy teeth—so the entire responsibility sits with the parents. Ignoring oral hygiene in the early years can lead to pain, infection, and long-term effects on growth, speech, confidence, and overall well-being.

Dental decay in toddlers is never “just baby teeth.” When left untreated, it can cause early tooth loss and make chewing, speaking, and smiling unnecessarily difficult. Infections often disrupt sleep, reduce appetite, and lead to nutritional imbalances, ultimately affecting healthy development and daily comfort.

Parents and caregivers form the first protective barrier. Brushing twice a day with the correct toothpaste should start as soon as the first tooth erupts. Dental check-ups—ideally by the age of one—help catch early problems and guide families toward proper care. Controlling dietary sugar is equally essential, as frequent sweets and sugary drinks remain the leading drivers of early childhood decay.

Children copy what they see. Turning brushing time into a shared, fun routine helps create habits that last a lifetime. With consistent guidance and prevention from day one, parents can secure their child’s oral health—and give them a healthier, happier start in life.

This comes amid intensified law enforcement efforts against online health-related scams in a nationwide drive to curb misleading cyber-enabled practices and protect public health.

Separate operations in Ormoc City, Catanduanes, Iloilo City, and Zamboanga City lead to the arrest of six individuals following entrapment activities conducted on April 7, April 10, and April 11, 2026, involving individuals allegedly offering unauthorized dental services.

Among those arrested is a 21-year-old female, alias 'Lourdes,' from Iloilo City, who was captured in Jaro on April 10, 2026.

Charges are being prepared against the suspects for violations of Section 33(a) of Republic Act 9484 or the Philippine Dental Act of 2007, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Authorities also call on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious online activities, as the PNP continues to enhance its cybercrime response and community protection initiatives. | via Hazel Joy Fortin, UA Intern
