Topic: “The Emptiness of Life Without God”

Text: Ecclesiastes 1:1–11 (KJV)

“Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” (Eccl. 1:2)

By: Dr. Nilo H. Flores

Date: January 6, 2026

INTRODUCTION

The book of Ecclesiastes is one of the most honest books in the Bible. It speaks the language of real life—questions, frustrations, disappointments, and deep searching of the soul. Solomon, the wisest and wealthiest king of Israel, looks back at life and evaluates everything he experienced: wisdom, labor, pleasure, success, and knowledge.

In Ecclesiastes chapter 1, Solomon speaks not as a young dreamer but as a man seasoned by life. His conclusion is clear and sobering: life without God at the center is empty, repetitive, and meaningless.

I. Life Without God Is Vanity

(Ecclesiastes 1:2)
The word vanity means emptiness, v***r, or breath—something that does not last. Anything that replaces God as the purpose of life will always end in disappointment.

II. Human Labor Without Eternal Purpose Is Wearisome

(Ecclesiastes 1:3)
Hard work alone cannot give lasting satisfaction. When labor is separated from God’s purpose, it leads to exhaustion rather than fulfillment.

III. Life Without God Becomes Repetitive and Monotonous

(Ecclesiastes 1:4–7)
Generations come and go, yet life seems to move in endless cycles. Without God, life feels like motion without direction.

IV. Human Knowledge Alone Cannot Satisfy the Soul

(Ecclesiastes 1:8)
The eye is never satisfied with seeing, and the ear is never filled with hearing. Only God can satisfy the deepest hunger of the human heart.

V. Life Without God Offers Nothing Truly New

(Ecclesiastes 1:9–10)
The world offers change, but not renewal. True newness—new life and new hope—comes only from God.

REFERENCE (KJV)

Ecclesiastes 1:1–11
Psalm 127:1
Matthew 16:26

ILLUSTRATION

Life without God is like chasing the wind. No matter how fast you run or how hard you try, you can never catch it. The pursuit leaves you tired and empty. Solomon chased everything the world could offer, only to discover that true meaning is found in God alone.

CONCLUSION

Ecclesiastes 1 reminds us that life makes sense only when God is at the center. Without Him, success is hollow, labor is weary, wisdom is incomplete, and joy is temporary. God alone gives life its true meaning.

APPLICATION

Examine your life today. Ask yourself where your time, energy, and heart are invested. Seek God first, and allow Him to give eternal purpose to everything you do.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
We acknowledge that apart from You, life is empty. Forgive us for seeking meaning in temporary things. Teach us to live for Your glory and for eternity. May our lives find rest, purpose, and joy in You alone.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

ONE PLAN OF SALVATION

BOTH OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT

Text: Hebrews 11 (KJV)
Topic: One Plan of Salvation
By: Dr. Nilo H. Flores
Date: December 31, 2025

INTRODUCTION

Many people believe there are two ways of salvation:

One for the Old Testament — by works or the Law

Another for the New Testament — by grace through Christ

But the Bible clearly teaches only ONE plan of salvation—from Genesis to Revelation. Hebrews 11 proves that God has always saved people the same way: BY FAITH.

The Old Testament saints were not saved by sacrifices, rituals, or obedience to the Law. They were saved by faith in God’s promise, just as we are today.

> Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
“But without faith it is impossible to please him…”

ORIGINAL MEANING (Background of Hebrews 11)

The Book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were tempted to return to the Law, temple rituals, and sacrifices. Hebrews 11 was written to show them that faith—not the Law—has always been God’s requirement.

Hebrews 11 is often called “The Hall of Faith”, not because these people were perfect, but because they trusted God’s promise even when they did not yet see its fulfillment.

They looked forward to Christ; we look back to Christ.
But the faith is the same.

I. Salvation Has Always Been by Faith, Not by Works

> Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

From the very beginning, God required faith, not human effort.

Abel offered by faith (v.4)

Enoch walked by faith (v.5)

Noah obeyed by faith (v.7)

None of them were saved by Law—the Law did not even exist yet.

A. Faith means trusting God’s Word even when you do not fully understand the outcome.

II. Old Testament Saints Trusted God’s Promise of a Coming Savior

> Hebrews 11:13 (KJV)
“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off…”

They did not yet see Jesus, but they believed God would provide salvation.

Abraham believed God (v.8–10)

Moses chose God’s reproach over Egypt’s riches (v.24–26)

A. They were not trusting animals, blood, or ceremonies—
they were trusting God’s promise.

III. Christ Is the Fulfillment of the One Plan of Salvation

> Hebrews 11:39–40 (KJV)
“And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
God having provided some better thing for us…”

Jesus Christ is that “better thing.”

Old Testament faith looked forward to the cross

New Testament faith looks back to the cross

A. The cross is the center of God’s salvation plan for all ages.

IV. Faith Produces Obedience, Not Salvation by Works

Good works never saved anyone—but real faith always produces obedience.

> Hebrews 11:8 (KJV)
“By faith Abraham… obeyed…”

A. Works are the fruit of salvation, not the root of salvation.

REFERENCES (KJV)

Genesis 15:6 – Abraham believed God

Habakkuk 2:4 – “The just shall live by his faith”

Romans 4:1–5 – Justification by faith

Ephesians 2:8–9 – Salvation by grace through faith

Hebrews 10:38 – Faith before Hebrews 11

ILLUSTRATION

Think of a bridge being built across a deep canyon.

Old Testament believers walked toward the bridge while it was still under construction, trusting it would be finished.

New Testament believers walk across the finished bridge.

Different timing—but the same bridge.

That bridge is Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSION

There has never been:

A Jewish way of salvation

A Gentile way of salvation

An Old Testament way and a New Testament way

There has always been ONE PLAN OF SALVATION — BY FAITH IN GOD’S PROMISE, fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

> Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…”

APPLICATION

1. Trust God completely, not religion or tradition

2. Rest in Christ alone for salvation

3. Walk by faith daily, not by sight

4. Teach others that salvation has always been by faith

PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your unchanging plan of salvation.
Thank You that from the beginning until now, You save by grace through faith.
Help us to trust You fully, walk by faith daily, and proclaim Christ boldly.
May our lives reflect the faith of those who trusted You before us.
All glory belongs to You alone.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

Devotion: The Benefits of Bible Reading and Prayer Day and Night

Text (KJV):
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…” — Joshua 1:8 (KJV)
“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” — Psalm 55:17 (KJV)

By: Dr. Nilo H. Flores
Date: December 17, 2025

Introduction

God desires a continual relationship with His people, not a part-time devotion. Reading the Bible and praying day and night keep the believer spiritually awake, grounded in truth, and connected to God. These practices shape our thoughts during the day and guard our hearts at night, leading to a stable and victorious Christian life.

I. Bible Reading Day and Night Strengthens Spiritual Life

God’s Word directs decisions, actions, and attitudes.

B. Night reading renews the mind and heart
Scripture washes away stress, fear, and worldly influence.

C. Continual meditation produces spiritual fruit
Those who delight in God’s Word grow strong and fruitful.

Prayer keeps us dependent on God throughout the day.

B. Night prayer deepens trust and intimacy
Quiet moments allow honest communion with God.

C. Consistent prayer brings peace and strength
God hears and answers those who call upon Him continually.

Illustration:
Prayer is like a lifeline—always connected, always sustaining.

III. Bible Reading and Prayer Day and Night Lead to Spiritual Stability

Reference: Isaiah 26:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:17

A. They guard the heart and mind
God’s Word and prayer protect against fear and temptation.

B. They develop spiritual discipline
Faith grows stronger through consistent devotion.

C. They prepare believers for spiritual victory
A rooted believer stands firm in trials.

Illustration:
A house built on a solid foundation remains standing in any storm.

Original Meaning (Brief)

Meditate (hagah – Hebrew): to think deeply, repeat, and reflect continually—day and night.

Pray: ongoing communication and fellowship with God, not limited by time or place.

These terms emphasize constancy and devotion, not routine.

Conclusion

Bible reading and prayer practiced day and night keep believers close to God, strong in faith, and guided by truth. A life rooted in God’s Word and sustained by prayer is a life of spiritual growth and peace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Teach us to love Your Word and to seek You in prayer day and night. May Your truth guide our steps during the day and guard our hearts at night. Help us to remain faithful, consistent, and obedient in our walk with You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Devotion on Joshua 1:8 (KJV)

Title: Prosperity That Comes from the Word
Text: Joshua 1:8 (KJV)
By: Dr. Nilo H. Flores
Date: December 17, 2025

Introduction

Joshua stood at a turning point in history. Moses, the great leader, was gone. The responsibility of leading Israel into the Promised Land now rested on Joshua’s shoulders. In this moment of pressure and transition, God did not give Joshua a military strategy or political advice. Instead, God pointed him to His Word. Joshua 1:8 reveals God’s divine formula for spiritual strength, wise living, and true success.

Joshua 1:8 (KJV):
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

I. God’s Word Must Dwell in Our Mouth

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth”

1. The Word is to be Spoken, Not Silenced
God’s Word was meant to be confessed, taught, and declared—not hidden or forgotten.

2. Faith is Strengthened by Speaking Scripture
When the Word stays in our mouth, it shapes our thinking and builds courage.

3. Spiritual Leadership Begins with the Word
Joshua could not lead others rightly unless God’s Word first ruled his own life.

Reference:
Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Romans 10:17

II. God’s Word Must Dwell in Our Mind

“But thou shalt meditate therein day and night”

1. Meditation Means Deep Thinking, Not Empty Thinking
Biblical meditation is filling the mind with God’s truth, not emptying it.

2. Day and Night Shows Consistency
God calls us to a continual relationship with His Word, not occasional reading.

3. Meditation Leads to Spiritual Stability
A mind anchored in Scripture is not easily shaken by fear or doubt.

Reference:
Psalm 1:2; Philippians 4:8

III. God’s Word Must Be Lived Out in Our Life

“That thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein”

1. Obedience Is the Goal of Meditation
God’s Word is not only to be known but to be obeyed.

2. Partial Obedience Is Not Full Obedience
God emphasized “all that is written,” not selective obedience.

3. True Success Follows Submission to God
Prosperity and success come after obedience, not before.

Reference:
James 1:22; John 13:17

Original Meaning (Hebrew Insight)

“Meditate” comes from the Hebrew word hagah, meaning to murmur, mutter, or speak softly. This implies repeating God’s Word until it sinks deeply into the heart.

“Prosperous” comes from tsalach, meaning to advance, to push forward, to succeed. It does not only mean material wealth but spiritual progress.

“Good success” comes from sakal, meaning to act wisely and with understanding. God’s success is wisdom-directed living.

In original meaning, God was promising Joshua wisdom-led progress, not worldly riches without righteousness.

Illustration

A farmer may own the best land, but if he never plants seeds or tends the soil, there will be no harvest. God’s Word is the seed. Speaking it is planting, meditating is watering, and obeying is harvesting. Many desire the harvest of success, but few commit to the daily discipline of the Word.

Conclusion

Joshua 1:8 teaches us that success in God’s eyes is not accidental—it is intentional. When the Word of God rules our mouth, fills our mind, and directs our actions, God Himself promises prosperity and good success. This is not the world’s success, but God’s approval, guidance, and blessing upon our lives.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your precious Word. Help us to keep it in our mouth, meditate on it day and night, and obey it with a willing heart. Teach us that true success comes from walking in Your will. Strengthen us, guide us, and make our lives fruitful for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
