𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | 𝗗𝗥𝗗𝗘 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗻𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗻, 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗠𝗼; 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺

In line with Proclamation No. 316, series of 2017, the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) marked Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) through art and video competitions led by the Department of Research, Development, and Extension (DRDE) on September 29.

Two major events were held: “SEAnehan,” a vertical short-form video contest, and “SEAning,” an art contest. Both carried the theme “Nagkakaisang Kapuluan, Panatag na Karagatan.”

In the SEAning art competition, Midshipman First Class Jestin Dela Torre won first place with a work showing a traditional boat sailing through waves, symbolizing the resilience of the Filipino people amidst challenges. He explained that his piece was inspired by the hardworking fisherfolk and the men in uniform who protect our resources, and “it is our duty to showcase the lives of our heroes.”

Meanwhile, Midn/1CL Jynyr Casiano placed second and Midn/1CL Vincent Asinas third.

In the SEAnehan Video Competition, “Panatag: In Defense of West Philippine Sea” won first place. Produced by Midn/3CL Iñigo Legaspi, Midn/3CL Mike Lenard Reyes, Midn/3CL Arvin Miguel Eugenio, Midn/3CL Jhonrey Apolonio, and Midn/3CL John Michael Headrick Ariola, the video stressed the need to defend maritime territory. “It is only right to protect our sea resources because these give life to our country,” the group said in a joint statement.

Second place went to “Tulong… o Lubog?” while “Dagat na Iisa, Panatang Sama-sama” placed third.

MANA Mo promotes the Philippines as a maritime and archipelagic nation. It emphasizes marine resources, heritage, and the seas’ role in national identity. It also synchronizes with Fish Conservation Week, International Clean-up Day, and National Maritime Day in September.

MASINLOC, Zambales—Fifty cadets from the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) participated in the “Pag‑asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan” exhibit and symposium on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) at the Masinloc Municipal Hall on September 25 2025.

The activity, named after its theme “Pag‑asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan,” aims to deepen awareness of the Philippines as a maritime and archipelagic nation. It also seeks to enhance students’ understanding of the country’s maritime heritage and the significance of the West Philippine Sea to national sovereignty.

The exhibit opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Masinloc Mayor Hazel J. Lim and Zambales Governor Hermogenes Ebdane Jr.

Moreover, the executive director of National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), Carminda R. Arevalo attended to show support for the event.

Retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio opened the symposium with a lecture on the Philippine island territories in the West Philippine Sea.

He stressed the need to establish the country’s historical and legal basis before asserting its maritime rights.

“Before we can challenge them, we have to agree on what is our historical and legal basis,” Carpio said.

During an open forum, participants were encouraged to consider how the Philippines can assert its sovereignty while maintaining peaceful coexistence with other claimant states.

The event concluded with a call to remain vigilant, informed and cooperative, summed up in the phrase, “West Philippine Sea, Atin ‘To!”

The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) illuminates in blue, to mark World Maritime Day, with the theme “Our Ocean — Our Obligation — Our Opportunity” on September 25, 2025.

The blue light has become a universal symbol of solidarity in the maritime community. Glowing the landmarks in blue raises awareness of contributions in the maritime sector and strengthens the call for sustainable practices.

World Maritime Day is an annual event led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which highlights the role of shipping in the global economy. A reminder that the shipping industry is the backbone of international trade that supports billions of lives.

For PMMA, ignition shows the symbol of unity among seafarers and stakeholders, drawing attention to the vital role of the shipping industry while calling for collective action toward sustainable maritime practices.

From the first day’s staggering number of 497 probationary midshipmen, only 384 remain, ready to be part of the Academy, Sept. 8.

Two days left before the oath-taking ceremony of the Class of 2029. Many tried to enter, seeking an opportunity inside, but many also fell along the way. These midshipmen have proven themselves by enduring the hardships of the Academy. Some felt low, yet their minds stayed high, and they continued to believe in their potential.

Now, as they take their oath as new members of the Corps of Midshipmen, they are ready and prepared to embark on the journey ahead as Fourth-Class Midshipmen.
