MY DAUGHTER WAS MOCKED FOR COMING TO THE FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE ALONE — UNTIL A DOZEN MARINES WALKED INTO THE GYM. My husband, Keith, died on a military base a few months ago. I was devastated when he died. But our daughter Katie suffered the most. She had always been DADDY'S GIRL. Last night was the father-daughter dance at her elementary school. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure we should go. "Mom, I want to go to honor Dad, even if he can’t be there with us," Katie said. After hearing her say that, I decided we had to go. Because Keith promised he’d take Katie to every father-daughter dance as long as she wanted. The gym was decorated with balloons and streamers. Little girls in sparkly dresses were dancing with their dads. Katie sat off to the side on one of the gym mats, hugging her knees and trying not to cry. She looked up at me and whispered, "Mom, can we please go home?" That almost broke me. I took her hand just as a group of mothers walked past us. When one of them saw my heartbroken daughter, she said, "Poor thing. It’s so sad. Events for complete families are always hard on children from... well, you know. INCOMPLETE families." I froze. Blood rushed to my face. "What did you say?" "I’m just saying that maybe SOME EVENTS JUST AREN’T FOR EVERYONE," she continued. "This is a father-daughter dance. If you don’t have a father—" "She HAS a father," I cut in sharply. "He gave his life defending this country. Defending YOU, too." Before I could say anything else, the gym doors burst open. BANG. The music cut off. Every conversation stopped. A dozen Marines walked into the gym. And in front of them was a man with silver stars on his shoulders. A GENERAL. His eyes settled on Katie. Then he lowered himself to one knee in front of my seven-year-old daughter until they were eye to eye. "Katie, I finally found you," he said. And when he spoke his next words, I could barely stay on my feet...
