WHAT TO DO WHEN LOST
"Not all those who wander are lost." - J.R.R. Tolkien
But,
"Those who are lost wander." - M.C. Gana
The moment you realize you are lost remember to STOP at once.
STOP means
Sit down
Think how screwed you are
Open your hands and cry into them.
Pray and prepare for a painful death.
Of course, that was supposed to be a joke.
Seriously, STOP means
Stop
Think
Observe
Plan
STOP.
Wandering makes you more lost. Sometimes the more you want to find the correct trail the more you get disoriented. Rest for a while. Stay where you are. If your companions realize you are missing, they will look for you. And they won't find you if you get yourself deeper into the forest. Stay on the trail or ecamp.
THINK
Where you might have taken a wrong trail. Think where you could have been by this time based on your detailed itinerary.
If you are in a group, how many are you? Where are you in the trailing team, are you the lead, the sweeper or somewhere in the middle? If you are somewhere in the middle. How many were in front of you? Behind you? How may minutes are you from the person directly in front and behind you? If you just got a little disoriented those following you will catch up on you if you are on the trail. This is just one example of what to ponder on.
OBSERVE.
Use your senses. Look around for footprints, broken twigs and trash by irresponsible hikers. Look far and wide. You might see your companions, locals or a few huts where you can ask for directions. Listen to tramping and trampling sounds as well as to talking hikers. Smell for unnatural scents in the wild like perfume, cologne, lotions and ci******es smoke. Even the smell of bonfire or grassfire could lead you to a fire maker that could help you.
PLAN
After stopping to think and observe, decide what is your next step - stay put or move. Then plan how do you do that. Consider the cause and effect and cost and benefit of your plans. Think ahead. Visualize. Your main goal is either to reunite with your companions or to be rescued. A goal broken down into steps is called a plan. A goal without a plan is just a wish. So, do you wish to be rescued or do you plan to be rescued?
STOP is a good mnemonic but is incomplete in itself. STOPA is a better acronym, but not good to look at as a mnemonic. So, what is the letter A? It is Action. You have a plan, so what now? A plan without action is still a wish. Implement your plan.
Let's improve it, when you get lost in the woods
STOP and Act.
"I am not a mountaineer. I am an outdoorsman."
