The Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades (SMSAT) must continue empowering students with skills while honoring its legacy, Congresswoman Baby Aline Vargas Alfonso said in her message for the school’s 62nd founding anniversary, delivered Tuesday by Mr. Alejandro A. Bangay.

Rep. Vargas-Alfonso was unable to attend the celebration due to budget hearings in Congress, but her written message highlighted the school’s enduring role in shaping the lives of young people and communities across the province.

“For sixty-two years, SMSAT has been a strong foundation of education in Sanchez Mira. From its humble beginnings, this institution has equipped generations of young people with technical skills, discipline, and values that prepare them for the challenges of life. Indeed, SMSAT is more than just a school—it is a builder of dreams and futures, ” she said.

She also pointed to this year’s theme, “Empowering Skills, Building Future: Honoring Our Roots, Advancing through Revised K to 12 Curriculum,” as a reminder of the school’s continuing mission to balance tradition with innovation.

“Empowering skills means giving our youth the knowledge and confidence to thrive, not only here in the Philippines but also in the global arena. Building the future requires hard work, perseverance, and dedication, while honoring our roots means remembering the founders, teachers, and alumni who laid the foundation of SMSAT, ” she explained.

The congresswoman also praised the coronation of Mr. and Miss SMSAT 2025 not only as a cultural highlight but also as a fundraising effort for school improvements.

“That is a noble cause—because it shows that even students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders are very willing to do their part to uplift their school. Your principal has been tireless in lobbying projects for SMSAT, and with your unity, more improvements will surely come,” she said.

This year’s coronation crowned Charlotte A. Mallabo and Vienne Zandro P. Corpuz as Mr. and Ms. SMSAT 2025.

They were joined by 1st Prince Brian Kyle Salvador, 1st Princess Kathleya Celine Q. Orteza, 2nd Prince Barry L. Vera Cruz, and 2nd Princess Leinielle Mitz Rojo.

Proceeds from the event raised ₱107,000, which the school has used to purchase a new sound and light system.

Other guests included Mayor Abraham Bagasin, represented by SB Member Napoleon Malto, Vice Mayor Dr. Connie O. Sacramed, and SB Member Carlo O. Cachapero, who echoed messages of pride in SMSAT’s history and encouragement for its future.

Established in 1963 with only 14 male learners under pioneer principal Juan O. Azurin and teacher Macario C. Blanco, SMSAT produced its first graduates in 1969.

Six decades later, it continues to be one of Cagayan’s leading institutions for technical and vocational education.

Students of the Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades (SMSAT) were urged to love their school and take pride in being Tradeans as the school opened its 62nd founding anniversary with a thanksgiving service and the oath-taking of student leaders, August 20.

“Love your school, because this is where the reality of your dreams begins. And to our teachers and employees, love your work, for through your dedication the world becomes a better place,” he said.

In her inaugural speech, Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) president Camille E. Reyes pledged to uphold her duties with purpose and integrity.

“This role is not just a title—it is a commitment to serve, to listen, and to lead with purpose. I will lead with integrity, listen with empathy, and act with courage. Together with my fellow officers, we will work together to ensure that every student will be heard, feel valued and well-represented,” she said.

Meanwhile, in his inspirational message, Alejandro A. Bangay, the school principal, urged the school community to take pride in technical-vocational education and the institution’s legacy.

“Be proud of your roots here in SMSAT. It has always been a great school. In fact, I used it as a benchmark in my previous assignment because of the strength of its programs. The leaders who came before you set a proud tradition of excellence, and together, we can bring back the glory days of SMSAT,” he said.

“The proceeds of the fund raising was not enough kaya kumuha tayo ng dagdag mula sa ating trust fund,” aniya.

Dagdag pa ng punong g**o, susunod na aayusin ng administrasyon ang mga opisina at iba pang pasilidad ng paaralan tulad ng SSLG, DRRM, canteen, at library.

A teacher from the Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades (SMSAT) emerged champion in creating interactive content using Canva during the Schools Division of Cagayan’s teachers’ convention on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) held Aug. 13–15 at Santa Ana, Cagayan.

Jouie C. Narag, a senior high school teacher, bested other participants in the category.

“This achievement will somehow inspire students and teachers to adapt offline and online platforms in learning and teaching experiences. There are lot of things to discover. It will also boost confidence and develop your skills in technology. This is the new trend. Everyone must be equipped with knowledge in educational technology, especially we are now in the AI generation,” Narag said.

The convention aimed to empower educators with skills to effectively integrate technology into teaching.

Other contested activities included the Search for Most Functional Computer Laboratory, Best Practices for ICT-Driven Instruction and Assessment, Tech-Teach Video, ICT Quiz Bowl, and Digital Impact Booth Award.

Students from the Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades (SMSAT) attended the Lumina science-themed light show on August 11, 2025, immersing themselves in an innovative blend of art, science, and technology aimed at inspiring environmental responsibility.

The exhibit, organized by educational program iExperience in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and creative group Earthlings, featured a digital planetarium, 3D gallery, shadow art, and light art installations. The presentation highlighted Earth’s evolution, humanity’s role in its preservation, and the urgent need for sustainable solutions.

Light artist Adrian Panal explained that the use of light was a deliberate choice to symbolize hope and renewal.

“We choose light as a tool in order to narrate the story of our planet. The word lumina means to illuminate—to give light, to give hope. It’s a reminder that it’s not over yet, and we can still change for the better,” Panal said.

Beyond imparting scientific facts, Lumina aims to leave students with a sense of wonder and responsibility.

Panal emphasized that the goal was to spark a deeper connection between people and the Earth, encouraging audiences to be proactive in finding solutions to environmental issues.

Using a blend of modern projection technology, interactive installations, and human performance, Lumina presents a visually captivating call to action—urging young minds not only to understand the planet’s plight but to become part of its preservation.

The Alliance of Campus Business Students (ACBS) of the College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy (CBEA) at the Cagayan State University–Sanchez Mira Campus inspired Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades (SMSAT) students to build businesses and think long-term during a seminar on empowering future entrepreneurs.

The event, titled “Young Minds, Big Plans: Empowering Future Entrepreneurs,” was held on August 13, 2025 at the SMSAT gymnasium for Grade 12 students in the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) track and Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand.

ACBS adviser Christie Melflor L. Aguirre, MPA, MBA, discussed the role of a business plan as a “roadmap” for growth and sustainability, warning that skipping planning often leads to failure.

“Quality is the best business plan rather than having no plan at all. Failing to plan is planning to fail,” Aguirre said.

She likened a business plan to a map that guides entrepreneurs toward their goals and stressed the importance of a feasibility study to determine demand before launching a product.

Aguirre also said entrepreneurship should extend beyond profit to social and environmental responsibility.

Mr. Alejandro A. Bangay, the school principal, urged students to make their future plans personal and self-driven.

“You have to plan for your future, not to plan for the future of others, not to plan for the future of your parents, brother, or sister, but your own. You plan for your future; you plan for yourself because nobody can help you except you alone. Your future lies with you, not with your relatives,” he said.

CBEA Dean Rey D. Viloria, CPA, MBA, capped the seminar by emphasizing financial literacy as a key to stability and resilience in times of crisis.

“Being responsible and frugal will save us when a crisis comes. Just because you are young doesn’t mean you shouldn’t save. At this age, we have to think long-term ,” he said.
