Sts. Marcellinus and Peter are honored as early Christian martyrs, celebrated with a basilica by Emperor Constantine and mentioned in the first Eucharistic prayer. Their lives were marked by the Diocletianic Persecution around 304 AD.
Marcellinus, a priest, and Peter, an exorcist, endured imprisonment with steadfast faith, turning their captivity into a chance to share their beliefs. They even converted their jailer and his family, highlighting the strength of their convictions.
Moved by their unwavering dedication, Pope St. Damasus I shared their story based on the testimony of their executioner, who himself embraced Christianity after their martyrdom.
Tradition tells that they were beheaded in a remote forest in an effort to prevent Christians from honoring their bodies. Despite these efforts, two women discovered their remains and ensured they received a dignified Christian burial.
Their bravery and enduring faith during persecution have inspired countless Christians over the centuries and continue to be celebrated in the church today.
