Leaders across Metro Cebu and the province are sounding the alarm over the possible local impact of escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning of potential increases in fuel and commodity prices while calling on the public and businesses to act with discipline and restraint.
In Cebu Province, Governor Pamela Baricuatro issued a stern warning to business establishments against exploiting global uncertainty by imposing unjustified price hikes. Speaking at a press briefing, Baricuatro said her administration is closely monitoring retailers suspected of excessive markups and will not tolerate profiteering at the expense of consumers.
In Cebu City, Mayor Nestor Archival declared a heightened state of economic and operational preparedness, citing the ripple effect rising global fuel costs can have on transportation, food, and basic commodities. The mayor directed city departments to strictly manage fuel consumption, emphasizing that government vehicles should be used efficiently and only for essential services to protect public funds and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of services.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King Chan likewise declared a state of preparedness, citing the anticipated rise in fuel prices and its potential effect on the cost of goods, transportation, and other essentials. In her message to Oponganons, Chan urged residents to plan trips wisely and limit unnecessary travel, conserve electricity by switching off lights and appliances when not in use, and remain mindful of water use.
In Mandaue City, City Administrator Gonzalo Malig-on said the local government will implement measures to reduce fuel consumption by government vehicles, with Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano set to issue a memorandum limiting vehicle use across departments. Under the plan, departments, except for essential operations such as disaster response services, including ambulances, and law enforcement, will be required to indicate how much they can cut fuel use as fuel prices rise and further hikes are being anticipated due to global oil market uncertainty.
Across Cebu, local leaders emphasized that preparedness is not only a government responsibility but a community effort, urging residents to conserve resources, avoid waste, and remain vigilant against profiteering as developments abroad continue to threaten household costs at home.
