Discovering the Beauty of the Ilocos Region: A Memorable Journey in May 2025
Last May 2025, I had the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Ilocos Region in the northern part of the Philippines. Known for its rich history, preserved heritage sites, stunning coastlines, and delicious cuisine, Ilocos proved to be one of the most unforgettable destinations I have ever explored.
Exploring Ilocos Sur
A major part of my trip was discovering the beauty of Ilocos Sur, a province rich in culture and history. Its capital, Vigan City, is one of the most famous heritage destinations in the country. Walking along Calle Crisologo, with its cobblestone streets and Spanish-era houses, felt like traveling back in time. I also visited the historic Bantay Bell Tower, where I enjoyed a panoramic view of the surrounding town and countryside.
Another beautiful attraction in Ilocos Sur was the Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo, where visitors can enjoy gardens, animals, and relaxing surroundings. I also had the chance to visit hidden gems such as beaches and old churches that reflect the province’s deep religious and historical roots.
Stunning Views in Ilocos Norte
My journey continued to Ilocos Norte, where natural beauty and adventure awaited. I visited the iconic Bangui Windmills, standing tall against the blue sky and sea breeze. Seeing these giant turbines up close was both impressive and inspiring.
Another unforgettable stop was the Paoay Sand Dunes. Riding a 4x4 vehicle over the rolling dunes was thrilling, and sandboarding down the slopes made the experience even more exciting. It felt like being in a desert right in the Philippines.
Coastal Wonders and Relaxing Beaches
The Ilocos Region is also blessed with beautiful beaches. Saud Beach in Pagudpud had powdery white sand and crystal-clear water, making it a perfect place to relax. The peaceful surroundings and refreshing ocean breeze made it one of the most relaxing parts of my trip.
Flavors of Ilocos
No trip to Ilocos would be complete without tasting its famous food. I enjoyed crispy bagnet, flavorful empanada, and the refreshing vegetable dish pinakbet. Each meal reflected the rich culinary traditions of the region. The Vigan longganisa was also a favorite because of its garlicky and savory taste.
Warm Hospitality
What made my visit even more special was the warmth of the Ilocano people. Everywhere I went, locals were friendly, helpful, and proud to share their culture and traditions. Their hospitality added a personal touch to the journey.
Final Thoughts
My visit to the Ilocos Region in May 2025 was a wonderful mix of history, adventure, relaxation, and culture. From the heritage treasures of Ilocos Sur to the scenic wonders of Ilocos Norte, every moment was memorable. Ilocos is truly a destination worth visiting, and I would gladly return to experience more of its beauty in the future.
