Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday clashed with Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla as well as police officers over his insistence that Estrada not be arrested inside the Senate building.

This is despite the fact that Sen. Jinggoy Estrada has already expressed his intent to voluntarily surrender amid an arrest warrant issued by Sandiganbayan Fifth Division.

The Senate minority bloc said the absence of the majority during Monday’s session was a boycott following the arrest of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, not a call for Senate independence as Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano claimed.

All 11 minority senators, or the Solid Bloc-11 (SB-11), waited two hours for the 5 p.m. session to commence, but no session took place due to the absence of all majority senators, including Cayetano.

“The claim that this is about Senate independence is false, because what happened today was about the rule of law, public accountability and a lawful process before the Ombudsman and the Sandiganbayan that no senator, no bloc and no presiding officer controls,” the minority bloc said in a joint statement.

Sen. Rodante Marcoleta‘s attempt to dismiss Sen. Risa Hontiveros‘ argument in a rules debate by invoking legal background has drawn criticism for appearing to reduce legislative work to lawyering, even as the Senate itself is composed of both lawyers and non-lawyers.

The exchange happened during the Senate plenary session on Tuesday, May 26, as senators debated Marcoleta’s motion to amend rules on remote participation.

The proposal has drawn scrutiny from the 11-member minority because it could allow senators who are not physically present to join plenary sessions through teleconference, amid questions over whether it could benefit Sen. Bato Dela Rosa and potentially, other senators dealing with criminal cases.

THE Senate was again embroiled in extended hand-wringing on Monday, after the majority and minority blocs traded blame over the widespread perception that the chamber, once billed as the incubator for future presidents and a pillar of democracy, had fallen to its lowest in the public esteem.

The debates began after minority senators objected to a “propaganda video” presented by Sen. Imee Marcos ahead of her speech, alleging that Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III, when he was still the Senate President, was moving with Speaker Faustino “Bodjie Dy” to foist “Con Ass”—shortcut for constituent assembly, one of the prescribed modes for Charter change—in a bid to foil any chance of Vice President Sara Duterte being elected President in 2028.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri was so angered by the video he blurted out, “nagiging Inday Badiday na ba tayo dito?” as he moved to strike down the video from the Senate records, and keep only Marcos’s privilege speech. “Inday Badiday” was the stage name of a popular gossip show host in the 70’s and 80’s.

Sen. Imee Marcos withdrew a video presentation from the Senate record on Monday, May 25, after members of the minority bloc, whom her video accused of a supposed charter change conspiracy, denounced it as propaganda and disinformation.

Marcos had used her time on the floor to present a video accusing officials in the administration of her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and members of Congress of plotting to amend the 1987 Constitution to extend terms and raise the minimum age for the presidency.

The video accused Marcos' allies in the Senate of supposedly using the Charter change route to disqualify Vice President Sara Duterte from the 2028 race. "Hindi ko inaakalang aabot sa punto ng buhay ko na ako, isang Marcos, magtatanggol ng 1987 Constitution," the president's sister told the chamber.

The backlash came immediately, and members of the minority moved to expunge the video's contents from the Senate's formal record. Senators including former Senate President Tito Sotto III questioned Marcos why she was speculating on Charter change at all without hearings or documents, in a chamber already dealing with the fallout from a shooting inside the building and political tensions from the recent coup.

Bea Alonzo and Vincent Co may have called off their rumored wedding plans, but a source claimed preparations for their life together had already gone beyond ceremonies and guest lists.

Fresh photos of the bride-to-be were shared showing her being hands-on with her and Co’s domestic abode, a posh condominium unit in Rockwell, Makati acquired by the businessman. The photos were first posted on X by a fan account, Bashia ().

In the pictures, she was deep in conversation with two women. The source, who shared the photos with this writer, and who is familiar with the couple’s setup, said the pictures showing Alonzo busily overseeing the interiors were taken before the wedding plans were scrapped

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has tagged Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa as “armed and dangerous” as authorities carrying the arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) continue their efforts to locate him.

According to a "reports, NBI Director Melvin Matibag said the classification is a precaution applied to individuals subject to warrant service.

Matibag said footage showing dela Rosa leaving the Senate with a companion carrying bags contributed to their assessment.

The statement comes after Dela Rosa's lawyer Jimmy Bondoc suggested that the warrant could be served through counsel.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said the Fi****ms License Revocation and Restoration Board is set to discuss whether dela Rosa’s firearm licenses should be canceled.

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday condemned the recent shooting incident inside the Senate premises, warning that the violence has deeply damaged the institution’s moral authority and dignity before the public.

During a privilege speech, Hontiveros expressed frustration over the chamber’s apparent return to business as usual following last week’s pursuit and gunfire.

“Has politics completely distorted our standards of how we treat our fellow human beings? The situation stooped so low that here, in and around these same august halls, someone could c**k a gun in front of civilians… that has never happened in the Philippines even during times of coups, not even during the darkest days of Martial Law did gunfire erupt within our halls,” she said.

In response, Senator Pia Cayetano delivered an emotional manifestation countering claims that the chamber has ignored the gravity of last week’s shooting incident, revealing that she feared for her life during the gunfire.
