Today, we celebrate the young truth-bearers rising in every campus.

Student journalism goes beyond existing. Under R.A. 11440, July 25 marks National Campus Press Freedom Day, which acknowledges the role of campus journalists and their remarkable contribution to the dissemination of facts, representation of student concerns, and discussion of relevant issues in the universities within the country.

As truth-building takes root within academic publications, support and security from schools and faculty mentors are vital to uphold fearless and responsible journalism, to develop their skills while respecting editorial independence. The campus press has the right to a safe space to deliver stories without the threat of red-tagging, censorship, and intimidation—a space to question, critique, and report without fear of suppression.

PUP Campus Journalists remains steadfast in empowering the student press, recognizing its essence in shaping the future media landscape, molding a courageous, accountable, and free press that strengthens our democracy.

May this day serve as a reminder to uphold and protect the voices of the student body as they write important stories, challenge the status quo, and ignite conversations that go beyond the campus walls.

ICYMI | The PUP Sentral na Konseho ng Mag-aaral (SKM) has requested a dialogue with the Offices of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and Services (OVPAA and OVPSAS) to address the concerns raised by fourth-year students regarding their graduation venue and schedule.

‎BREAKING | President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. approved the P6.793 trillion proposed national budget for 2026, a 7 percent increase compared to the 2025 budget.

‎Despite this increase, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) is set to face yet another looming budget cut, with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) alloting only P3.5 billion guaranteed budget to the university under Tier 1 funding, less than a third of the P12.7 billion proposed budget.

Under the two-tier system, agencies are required to submit funding requests in two categories: Tier 1, which covers the continued financing of existing programs, and Tier 2, which includes new or expanded initiatives that must undergo stricter evaluation and align with national priorities.

As of writing, the PUP’s P9.2 billion request under Tier 2 remains pending approval.

The P3.5 billion guaranteed budget will be allocated among over 95,000 students across 25 PUP campuses and further divided into Personnel Services (PS), Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), and Capital Outlay (CO).

‎PUP experienced its first major budget cut in 2010, with a P43 million slash that sparked strong opposition from students and faculty over a proposed tuition hike, leading to protests that included the historic burning of chairs.
