The Will of D – The Will of the Devil (One Piece Theory)
In the story, it is canon that the Will of D. is said to be the “mortal enemy of the Gods.” In the Bible, God’s eternal enemy is the Devil. Interestingly, the Celestial Dragons (descendants of the 20 Kings) call themselves “Gods.” This creates a parallel between the D-bearers and the enemies of these so-called “Gods.”
During the Void Century, there existed an Ancient Kingdom that was far more advanced than the world today. From this kingdom came the technology that would later be known as the Devil Fruits. Much like how Caesar Clown attempted to replicate artificial fruits, the Ancient Kingdom had already mastered the ability to create weapons that carried their legacy into the future.
But why were these powers cursed as “Devil Fruits”?
Dr. Vegapunk confirmed that Zoan-type Devil Fruits have their own consciousness, which is inherited by the next user. This leads to the question: where did this consciousness come from?
The theory: the people of the Ancient Kingdom embedded fragments of their souls, wills, and memories into these fruits. This was their way of ensuring their purpose and ideals would never be erased, even if their kingdom fell. While canon only confirms Zoans as having a will of their own, it is logical to extend this idea—all Devil Fruits carry a fragment of a soul. That’s why, when a user dies, the fruit seeks out a new vessel.
After the Ancient Kingdom fell, the 20 Kingdoms branded these creations as “Devil Fruits.” By doing so, they painted the Ancient Kingdom itself as “Devils,” enemies of their so-called “Gods.” It was only after this war that the World Government was established, carrying forward the propaganda that the “D” and the fruits were dangerous and cursed.
Thus, the Will of D. is not random. It represents the Will of the “Devils” — the inheritors of the Ancient Kingdom’s spirit, passed down through bloodlines and chosen individuals.
The D, then, stands for those who inherited the freedom, courage, and defiance of the Ancient Kingdom — the eternal enemies of the self-proclaimed “Gods” of the world.
