TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN, Philippines โ€” Naidokumento ang mga kolonya ng endemic giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus) at malaking flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) sa 10 araw na biodiversity monitoring mission sa kagubatan ng Apayao mula Abril 20 hanggang Abril 30, sabi ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

PENRO conducts high-tech forest monitoring in Sierra Madre

To help ensure the protection of forests and biodiversity in the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) conducted a geospatial mission using advanced drone and LiDAR technology in protected areas.

PENRO carried out the operation in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region II.

Using a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with LiDAR, high-resolution data was gathered on forest conditions, including canopy density, tree structure, and terrain, even in hard-to-reach areas.

Based on the operation, the collected data is expected to help improve the monitoring of forest changes and the identification of threats such as illegal logging and the impacts of climate change.

The information gathered will also support forest protection efforts, reforestation initiatives, and sustainable land management in the area.

Children and parents warmly welcomed the distribution of food, which brought temporary relief and joy to the community.

According to some residents, activities like this are important, especially in remote areas, as they help meet daily needs and show that there are people supporting them.

The program aims to assist indigenous communities and strengthen trust and cooperation among residents toward a safer and more orderly community.
