Final three crew members of the Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3, which was officially confirmed sunk off the coast of Kochi, India, on May 25, 2025.The last three crew members remained onboard in a final attempt to stabilize and save the vessel, demonstrating exceptional courage before they were safely evacuated. All 24 crew members, including several Filipino seafarers, were rescued safely through a coordinated international maritime response. The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo and 12 with calcium carbide, along with 84.44 metric tonnes of diesel and 367.1 metric tonnes of furnace oil, raising serious environmental concerns. The Indian Coast Guard promptly activated its Pollution Response Protocol, deploying aircraft equipped with advanced oil spill mapping technology, and confirmed that no oil spill has been detected as of this writing. Authorities remain on high alert, working closely with local government agencies to ensure the safety of the marine environment. The global maritime community has commended the professionalism, solidarity, and heroism demonstrated by all parties involved in this life-saving mission.
