Making the Right Decisions

It’s not always easy to do the “right” thing. Sometimes you’re forced to choose between standing for truth or yielding to the pressure of friends, colleagues, or even family who would rather you make compromises. But there is no “gray area” when it comes to right and wrong. Someone once said, “I’d rather stand with God and be condemned by the world than stand with the world and be condemned by God.” You either belong to Jesus or you don’t – it’s that simple. If you're a person of integrity, you can’t pick and choose each day whether or not you’ll do the right thing. Be aware that making decisions which are pleasing to God won’t always make others happy. We’re told in Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” There is nothing that is worth missing out on heaven – absolutely nothing! That’s why it’s important to spend time with God every day! Make sure you have a healthy diet of “spiritual food,” which includes being careful what you eat, what you watch, what you listen to, what you read, and the people you hang around with. Choose godly friends – ones that will draw you closer to Jesus, not pull you away. C.S. Lewis wrote, “What draws people to be friends is that they see the same truth. They share it.” Distance yourself from people who try to influence you for evil purposes; they are not your real friends. You can love them, forgive them, want good things for them, and still move on without them. Instead, surround yourself with people who inspire you, love and respect you, pray for you, and protect you. Surround yourself with people who want to see you grow closer to Christ. In the Valley

When things are tough and you’re down in the valley, with the fog so thick it clouds your vision, it’s easy to feel lost, lose faith, and begin blaming God for your misery. But whatever heartache you feel, it is NEVER God’s fault! He loves you with an abiding, unconditional love and He wants you to have life, and have it more abundantly. But sometimes, He allows you to be in the valley, where you can truly experience the glory of God and His divine intervention in your life. It is in the valley that you receive His comfort and come to understand that He is a God full of love, grace, and mercy, with the power to heal and restore. Instead of being bitter against God, thank Him for your trials! The Bible says in Philippians 4:11, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.” In other words, no matter what you are experiencing, whether heartache, loneliness, or the fullness of His joy, be content! The only thing you need to concern yourself with . . . is your relationship with God! It is when you are in the valley that you are leaning on God the most! Pray that God will keep you close to Him and ever faithful, and claim this text found in Psalm 23:4: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” Text: Joshua 1:9, John 10:10, Psalm 25:4, Psalm 37:24, John 14:1-3

Spiritual Junk Food

Preparing our children for eternity is the most important job on earth! The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” That’s a beautiful promise for parents as well as a great incentive to raise kids to love Jesus. A lot of prayer is needed to accomplish this task because this sinful world makes it even more challenging to keep kids’ minds on spiritual things. We are warned in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” This world we live in gets more dangerous every day, because Satan has mastered the art of disguising sin so that not only children, but parents as well, are fooled by his deceptions. Some of the tools the devil uses are television, video games, books, spiritualism, and music, just to name a few. It’s not always the tools that are wrong – it’s what kids are watching, reading, and doing! That’s why parents need to make sure they are spiritually feeding their kids. Before heading to the checkout counter with the latest book, toy, or video game, ask yourself, “Will this draw my children closer to Jesus?” If the answer is “no,” put down the spiritual junk food and leave the store! Ask God to give you strength, courage, wisdom, and discernment to know the best spiritual food that will introduce your kids to their Best Friend - Jesus! Attitude of Gratitude

No matter how discouraged you are today, take fifteen minutes to do nothing but praise Jesus! Start writing down all the things you’re thankful for and then praise God for His blessings. Those fifteen minutes will change the whole course of your day, for when you concentrate on your blessings and not on your problems, your whole spirit is lifted! Your attitude of gratitude is infectious! People respond differently to a smile rather than a pout, grumpy frown, or face of indifference! Not only will others be blessed by their interaction with you, but you’ll be happier too! Once you start to realize how much God has given you and how blessed you truly are, it’s life changing! You’ll feel the warmth of God’s love and your faith in him will grow! With God’s strength you can trust whatever trials you are going through . . . to Him. And when you stop trying to fix your own problems, you’ll no longer feel frustrated, abandoned, and all alone, because you’ll realize God has never left you or forsaken you and He’s not going to start now! God has your back! He loves you more than you could possibly know and He is with you always! Begin your day with an “attitude of gratitude,” and you’ll enjoy God’s sweet peace all day long! Between You and the Lord

One of the best things you can do for someone you love is pray for them - not just a casual mention of their names - but passionately pray! When you are praying for those you love, not only does it benefit those you are praying for, but it also gives you more patience, tenderness, and love in your heart for them as well. You become more sensitive to their needs and desires, and when differences of opinions arise, you are much more equipped to handle them in a Christ-like way. The Bible says in Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” It’s selfish to pray only for your own needs; God wants you to think of others and prayerfully uplift their needs as well. However, it’s important to pray with a humble spirit. No one wants to hear a self-righteous person announce they are praying for them. Telling a weaker brother or sister that you are praying for them could easily send them running away from God instead of drawing them closer. Remember that you are no better than anyone else, including the person you are praying for. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sometimes it’s better to keep your prayers just between you and the Lord! Not About Stuff

When you are nearing the end of life’s journey, and you look back over the years and think about what you’ve accomplished and what you wish you had, it becomes crystal clear what really matters most. It’s not important how fancy your house was, what kind of cars you drove, how prestigious your job, or how much money you had in the bank. Bottom line is - it’s not about stuff! When you’re young you think you’ve got your whole life in front of you and there’s no sense of urgency about the importance of how you spend your time. But make no mistake, life is short, and before you know it, you will blink and now you’re the one looking back wondering how life went by so quickly. The only way to ensure peace and satisfaction at the end of your life is to have lived your life surrendered to God. When you allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide your every step, your heart will be filled with joy and peace such as you’ve never known. There’s no better place to be than following God’s plan for your life for He alone knows your wants, dreams, and desires even more than you do. The Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11, “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ ” It just doesn’t get better than that! Make sure your future is secure by giving God control of your life starting today because everlasting joy is all about trusting Jesus . . . and “not about stuff!” Text: Hebrews 10:36, 1 Timothy 2:2-4, Psalm 119:105, James 1:5

Fast and Pray

Fasting is simply the act of abstaining from food for spiritual reasons. When Christians have a big decision to make or face a crisis and they need divine guidance and intervention, they are encouraged to “fast and pray.” Perhaps a loved one’s life is hanging in the balance, someone is experiencing a financial crisis, or a marriage is falling apart; it’s always a good idea to fast and pray when a miracle is needed. All throughout the Bible we have examples of those who fasted and prayed, such as Paul, Daniel, Esther, Elijah, David, Moses, and even Jesus. Most of the people in the Old Testament fasted because of a crisis they were facing, but Jesus fasted for His calling. We shouldn’t just fast when facing problems, but also for our purpose. There are many ways to fast, and the length of fasting varies as well, but whatever type of fasting you choose, prepare yourself beforehand by confessing your sins to God, forgiving anyone who has offended you, and surrendering your heart to Jesus anew. It’s also important not to announce to others that you’re fasting. Some people fast just to show others what great Christians they are, but this is not pleasing to God. Matthew 6:16 says, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting.” An act of faith like fasting is to help you draw closer to your Lord and Savior, not to get attention from others. Most important, it is a biblical way to humble yourself. The Bible says in Ezra 8:21, “I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God.” When you fast, do so for the right reasons - to hunger for the presence of God. Relationship Requirements

Every friendship requires effort to keep it healthy, strong, and alive. It doesn’t matter whether it is between spouses, couples, parents, children, or friends, all relationships need to be nurtured. Just like plants that will die without food, water, and light, human relationships need constant care as well. Making God first is the most critical requirement for all healthy human connections. Without God, love is not possible because God IS “love!” When God is the center of your relationships, you will not only receive love, but there will be mutual respect, honesty, and loyalty. All of those traits are highly sought after but sadly hard to find because too many relationships are not built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. When there are bumps in the road, arguments that come up, or differences of opinion, all can be resolved peacefully when approached with the spirit of God’s love. Choose your friends wisely. Prayerfully w**d out your friendship garden by removing toxic relationships, those who bring you down or are not helping you grow spiritually. Instead, choose healthy relationships that will draw you closer to Jesus, and help you to be the person God wants you to be. Text: Proverbs 17:17, Job 6:14, Colossians 3:13, Ephesians 4:1-3

Repetitive Sins

Why is it that there are some sins that no matter how much you try, you tend to repeat over and over again. You even go to the Lord with a sincere heart filled with remorse and ask forgiveness, but when the temptation rolls around again, you make the same mistake. It is then with exasperation and despair that you approach God’s throne room . . . perhaps even somewhat embarrassed to ask God for forgiveness one more time. If you are feeling as if you are the only one who has ever felt this frustration, read what the apostle Paul writes in Romans 7:15-25, “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. . . . For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.” The secret to maintaining a life of righteousness, is to always abide with Christ. The minute you take your eyes of Jesus, you will fall! The Bible says in 1 John 3:6-10, “No one who abides in him keeps on sinning. . . . Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, . . . No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, . . . By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God.” The only way to stop the cycle of repetitive sins . . . is to stay close to Jesus! Quitters Never Win

When you’ve said or done something you wished you wouldn’t have, or even made a mistake at work that you’re sure all your co-workers are talking about, it’s not the time to quit and run! You might feel like the biggest loser in the world and be so embarrassed you want to hide under the closest rock, but that will never fix the problem or undo the damage that’s already been done. Running from your troubles is a cowardly thing to do and most certainly will not bring you peace, joy, or happiness for “quitters never win and winners never quit!” Instead of running away, face the music! When you are humble and willing to admit mistakes, it is much easier for others to forgive than if you try and hide it or defend your actions. Ask for forgiveness and a chance to prove yourself, then, go forward with Holy Spirit power, claiming Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Before long, no one will look at you and even remember the incident, because they will see a “winner,” not a “quitter”! The Battle Is Already Won

The world today is faced with wars, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, human tragedies, and financial collapse. It seems no matter which way you turn, there are dangers and unrest, so much so that it can easily keep you in a state of panic. And when you throw politics in the mix, it seems this world is going downhill fast! This age of uncertainty is one of the main ingredients for a life lived in fear where every cell in your body cries out for stability and security. But when life seems dismal and bleak, remember that as Christians there’s no need to be afraid, because you know the end of the story! You know that God wins! Your security is in Jesus Christ alone. With Him by your side, the battle is already won! When everything and everyone fails you, Jesus never fails! All the upheaval and scary things going on in the world show just how much you need a Savior - the stabilizing source of your faith in troubling times. When you feel afraid, give your uneasy feelings, your fears and your anxiety to God, and ask Him to hold your hand and never let go! He will calm your fears and take away that queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach. The Bible says in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” No matter what is happening in the world, you can depend on Jesus, for He will never let you down! Sinking Ships

Getting along with yourself can be one of your greatest challenges. When you listen to the opinions of everyone around you, it can fill you with self-doubt, anxiety, and distress. Well-meaning, opinionated friends or family can make comments that can send you instantly to the island of insecurity. And if you are not careful, subconsciously you’ll start changing your behavior in attempts to make them happy. Before you realize it, you’ve become an entirely different person, and guess what. You won’t be any happier trying to be someone others want you to be. Be yourself! Stop listening to what friends, family, and especially, strangers think of you. Instead of trying to please everyone else, strive to please Jesus! Live your life to please God, and if you can make Him happy, that’s all that matters! You’re good! Think about this: “Ships don’t sink because of the water around them. Ships sink because of the water that gets in them.” Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside and weigh you down–just like a sinking ship. There will always be people who want to criticize, belittle, or change who you are–but don’t allow all that noise to get in the way of becoming who God wants you to be. Concentrate on making Jesus happy . . . and you’ll be happy too! Text: Psalm 139:14-16, Ephesians 2:10, Proverbs 16:3, Galatians 1:10
