HOMEWORK: A BOON OR A BANE?
Marjanah M. Matuan

Homework – an integral part of student’s duties at school. A tediously-vigorous work that allows teachers to assess their student’s learning outside the classroom. Moreover, it is a requisite for students to comply from their teachers to pass a particular subject. The majority finds homework as an exhausting and a stressful written task that can be excessively demanded by their subject teachers, which leaves them loaded even at home. As a result, it keeps them out of reach from their personal activities and lessens their time that is supposed to be spent for their family. Yes, homework does improve students’ academic life, but, somehow, hinders them to grow personally since they lack with time to enjoy. The making of the House Bill No. 3611 or the “No-Homework” policy, leads for the involved and concerned to hold with their own remarks.

As a student who is aware and also has been bombarded with home works, realizing that homework is indeed tiring yet conducive. It yields a chance of review and additional learning for the students. Also, it serves as a feedback mechanism for teachers to employ so that they could determine if the students can recall and understand their lesson in a particular day. Furthermore, teachers and students will not be put under pressure for the teaching-learning process to take place in a short period of time. Instances may occur that an hour of implementing the lesson may not be sufficient ensuing for the need to extend the study outside the school premises. We may have been writhing in working with our home works, but let us look at its essence. On the one hand, homework can be an avenue for a learner to bond with his/her family.

The “No-Homework” policy aims to eliminate homework as a school requirement from kindergarten to high school and restrict school activities to the campus. This will be a great deal for the students who tend to choose to have a lot of time doing their personal wants. Since, different learners have different views and learning experiences, others may agree with its enactment and others may not. To halt this argument, take this question as an assignment; is homework a boon, or a bane?

Be still there
Jarsey Krim A. Taub

Little changes are yet to come,
Tomorrow is with no assurance,
Tears are meant to subside,
Smile can be yours for now,
And it may be gone for tomorrow,
As time passes by,
There is more ahead of us,
What life may bring,
Is what I do not know about,
I take a glance,
And make a long run,
I know I can make it,
But please be with me through time,
At my peak,
Be there by my side,
I can make it,
But that's only
If I'm with my true home,
Please be home,
Forever.

Shape Shifters
Shaniah Gecain

“To be beautiful means to be yourself and you don’t need to be accepted by others. You just need to accept yourself.” A lot will say that our body image plays a very significant role in our individualistic society, in which it can be anyone’s identity, a woman or even a man’s identity. In our individual self, we believe that our bodies are flawed, which is in fact, true. Our physical forms have recently become a commonplace in the media, whether they are used positively or negatively, but along this situation, many of us have been fond of criticizing one another. This issue that started from us can flow through the society which leads to body shaming.
Body shaming is one of the biggest problems in today’s generation and it has been a controversy not only to women but also to men. It is the same as bullying and people find humor in degrading others by looking at them physically. Does body shaming really start from other people? Most probably yes, but somewhat not. We have been abiding to a world where there are lots of shape shifters. It is undeniable that the body changes naturally many times throughout the length of our lives yet most of us changes bogusly because we don’t want someone to judge us by what they will see physically. Shaming doesn’t usually start with other people, it starts within us. We are bombarded by criticism that is why we start losing our self-esteem that leads to having no confidence to face reality. Negative thoughts will conquer our self that results to living in fear of being thrown by foul and hurtful words. Some people will change and shift themselves to shapes that people wanted to see. Some would even isolate themselves and rise when people think they become pleasing to one’s eyes.
Our body image is the foundation of our soul. What we are should be bound to face the world with not fear at all. A wise man even said that, it is the perception that a person has of their physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. Even these feelings are positive or negative, we should embrace it and never to dull our minds. We should not let our insecurities turn us into shape shifters where we become what we wanted to pretend. Sometimes we even take our own insecurities and aim them at other people to make them feel better, but not us. It just boosts down our self-esteem by comparing others by what we are.
We have been criticizing ourselves for years and it works. We should try approving of ourselves and see what will happen. The beauty is not about pretending something you are not, or altering yourself by what others wanted to see about you, or shape shift into something even if you’re not comfortable with it just because you want yourself to be perfect. We are flawed, but we are unique. Our shape, sizes, and colors may vary, but we are beautiful in our own way. Our self-worth is not defined by how other people treat us. We are never a problem and we are already good enough. All we have to do is not to let our minds bully and criticize our body.

US: The Path for a New Beginning
Jeriel Tero

Society, recently, is shrouded with toxics. Morals are polluted. People’s acts are contaminated. Vices are rewarded and justice is buried. Performing acts of kindness is recorded and documented because our status quo, our set-up is masked with hidden intentions and worst influences.

Virtually, every other day, we hear news on tv and radio about problems affecting our living. Have grown accustomed to this sort of news, we have become immune to it. Immune of the wastes veiled by the government, immune of murdering innocent lives by depriving their rights to defend themselves, immune of war between the rightists and separatists, immune of oppression, and immune of freedom graving down our human rights.
Generation has changed, truly. The past years are already burned with today’s blaze. Continuity of this may result of treating each based on the riches, fame, influence and power they possess – then we become nothing.

More people want 5 seconds of fame than a lifetime of meaning and purpose, because what’s popular and influential is more crucial than what’s right and just. Realities are now purchased and only fakes leave trace because today, ratings are more important than the truth. Our government constructs thrice as many prisons than schools. Presidents lie, politicians trick us, leaving their promises unanswered and untouched. Race is still an issue, and so is religion. Do all of these have ends? Or we just let these continue? 92% of the songs on the radio are about s*x. Technology has given us everything we ever want and steals everything we really need. Pride is at all-time high, humility is at all-time low. Money is still the root of all evil, yet we tell our kids, “Don’t get that degree which the jobs don’t pay enough.” Good deeds are only done when there’s a profit margin. Videos of the misfortunes of others go viral that we laugh and share them with our friends just to laugh with us. Isn’t it the reality? Aren’t we slapped by our own acts?

So… What can we do in the face of all this madness and chaos, what is the solution?
Sad as it may seem, we cannot do nothing. We can love and spread its influence. Not the love we hear in our favorite song but that real love, true love, and boundless love that dwell within the core of our heart. A love that we naturally share without expecting something in return; without documentation and records of the cameras. We can love… love each other from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed. Together, let’s plant seeds of goodness and sow a little more compassion than usual. Instead of trying to change others, why not change ourselves first. Let’s change our hearts.

We’ve been traded with lies, brainwashed by our leaders and those we trust to not recognize our brothers and sisters, and to exhibit anger, hatred and cruelty. But once we truly love we will meet anger with sympathy, hatred with compassion, cruelty with kindness.

Love is the most powerful weapon on the face of the earth. Robert Kennedy once said that few will have the greatness to be in history, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events and to the total of all those acts will be written in the history of generation.

Yes, the world is watered with toxics and man-made viruses, and the path towards a new beginning starts, within you…us.

Peers: Pressure or Consolation
Shaniah Gecain

Peer Pressure… the way that this term is used gives us the hint that it always yields detrimental circumstances in a person’s life. But, does peer pressure that people are talking about means that the influence being given by others socially is necessarily and always negative? In factual sense, it doesn’t.

This in-depth issue doesn’t really bring out its multiple definitions yet it hides unknown and deep viewpoints. Usually, the way that the term peer pressure is used is describing a pessimistic and unenthusiastic influence that one peer, or group of peers, has on another person. The term is often used when describing how a previous well-behaved young person developed problematic behaviors, especially related to alcohol or drug use. Moreover, peer pressure may increase the risk of other harms, which can be even more dangerous than addiction, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, overdose, poisoning, and even commit crimes that could lead to worst, which is death.
There are also cases when a person takes peer pressure mentally and emotionally that leads them to shatter their emotions. Especially when a person gets too attached to his or her peers, they cannot simply isolate or detach themselves to them and to the situation they’re in.

Anonymously in profound sense, this kind of impact to teenagers can break them apart because in this situation, they have used more their hearts over their minds. For example, a lot of teenagers these days have been more close to their friends than their families. They tend to create and find happiness among their peers but when the time comes that both parties will have a conflict or an argument, they end up losing their way; there’s no one they can run into because their lives revolve into their peers. It sometimes results to rebel just to cope with the loss they have. They start again trying to fit in to new peers.

Aside from all the negative effects of peer pressure, in mere reality, it also generates a constructive and a positive effect. For some instances, when a person has been into peer pressure, she could be exposed into having a healthy lifestyle which pushes her to engage in sports that can also lead to gaining self-esteem. This kind of interaction and communication to peers can involve someone to be positive and may be a role model to others. It allows someone to do the things they can’t typically do to other people such as having respect and being an inspiration to others. On the other hand, since peers are the people whom we spend time, they can also be recognized as friends. So even though it is called “peer pressure” where the perception is having negativities to arise, still, they will get something good from it.

Nature has its own way in expressing something. Peer pressure is designed to cause an individual to act in a certain manner. It is part of the development of adolescents.

Be You
Ner Jan Ramos

People want to soar high
To reach their goals and dreams in life
Whatever it takes to be contented
Risk doesn’t matter, not to be exhausted

In the journey of success, sometimes is disappointing
It makes you feel worthless, sometimes nothing
That’s why, you must have an endless faith
Encouragement and willingness will then be straight

If you lost your way, just look back
Remember that God is always at your back
He won’t bring you this far just to fail you
He will give you strength to uplift you

Fighting for your dreams is not easy
For there will be temptation and greasy
Yet, you must learn how to dance in the rain
Yet, you must know how to earn to gain

You need to fight to succeed
You need to strive to proceed
Just be who you want to be
Not what other’s wants to see

Sa Pamagat na lang may Tayo pa
Jarsey Krim A. Taub

Sa pagkahaba-haba ba ng ating istorya,
Tuluyan rin palang magwawakas,
Ang tungkol sa ating dalawa,
Ngayo’y aklat na lamang na sarado na.

Sa pamagat na lang yung may tayo pa,
Ikaw at Ako yun yung nakaburda,
Sa wakas ng pahina,
Ayun sumuko ka.

Bubuksan at pilit na binabalikan,
Tilang istorya ng nakaraan,
Ay sariwa pa’t di nakalimutan,
Patuloy na umaasang madurugtungan.

Hindi na mapagpapatuloy pa,
Ang nasimulan ay tinuldukan ko na,
Kahit mismong ako’y nasasaktan,
Aalis akong lulan pa rin ang nakaraan.

Paalam sa naiwan nating bakas,
Salamat sa kwentong walang pintas,
Iyong dating pangako’y di na mapapasabukas,
Pasensiya sa ating naging wakas.

Obscure Water
Earl John Ares

You walk with a smile
He walks with a pain
She walks with a sacrifice
Still not recognize the waters

You asked a treasure
He asked a job
She asked a strength
Still not recognize the waters

The day comes you soak with vices
He blames himself
She cleans your mess
Still not recognize the waters

And then the water springs at your eyes
Time has left you behind, you’re blind
You didn’t recognize the waters they bind
The brine waters at their skin, now you realize

Yes, it’s only you have waters
You forget or drench to foster
Was once an unrecognized waters
Now a fuel to your voyage forever.

To Infinity and Beyond
Jeriel Tero

Hey Random Space Traveler,
If you come across this piece of paper, then there is also another species searching for the probability of life. We, humans as we call ourselves are unaware of the fact that life is present beyond our planet. And we call our planet as Earth. If you are star gazing, you may find us at Solar System, Orion Spiral Arm, Milky Way Galaxy, Local Group, Virgo Supercluster, Universe. Or this is what our location is according to our astronomers, and which may completely differ from your naming system.

If I am able to arouse your curiosity and you are searching for our home, you may come across a mass of spherical burning orb. And if that orb is what we call as sun, you may observe that there are eight (according to us) spherical balls revolving around us. The third ball which appears to be blue and white is my home.

There are lots and lots of things which I shall like to tell you about me. I am just a child, filled with tons of curiosity. During the night, I escape to my terrace and with my telescope, I probe the lavished cosmos. The darkness fascinates me; the mysterious playground of nothingness, the wonders that are yet to be discovered. This universe seems like a beautiful lady, hiding us in her womb, protecting us from the dangerous unknown. A past which we probably try to figure out, and a future yet to witness. The silence, so secret, is an alluring lullaby to my ears.

Black holes. Mysterious gateway of this universe separating the unknown from us. A gateway to heaven or a highway to hell. Nobody knows. A region that defies the flow of time. It even captures the one who enjoys his freedom the most, Light. A prison where nature has no control, or an escape from our mother's womb.

Everyday I seek for you. Alien, is the term we have for you. Aliens are often broadcasted as the evil who just wants to destroy us. The irony of the situation is, it's humans who are slowly destroying earth. The earth is slowly approaching towards its sixth mass extinction and probably when you discover this, I may not be able to witness you in person because a human's life expectancy is around 80 years. In case we meet, I have a cupboard in my room for you to hide. Trust me I will keep you safe, no matter what. Ha! Forgive me for I underestimate your power. It's us who need your power to change life here.

We can be friends. You are the only one who can quench my thirst for knowledge. Whenever I think about you, all I can sense is intelligence illuminating from your body and if you are able to decode this message, I will be proved right.

Right now I am trying to figure out how to convey my message to you. But if you come across this, it means I have succeeded. Also this contains a long thin black substance which is called hair and few white stuffs called nails. Carry out whatever tests you like with it. It's a puny gift to you.

I will be waiting for you. Forever and ever after.
A curious star-struck human who wants to befriend you.

Polishing Mental Faculties
MARJANAH M. MATUAN

Grades. A student requirement toward one’s academic journey. Recognition, scholarships, security – all in the hands and hard works of a determined student. It defines our stay in school, bolsters student’s opportunities and advantages, and encourages us in times of passion and goal. Students as we are, want a passing grade as much as we want to graduate. However, learners with multiple intelligences, do grades define one’s intellectual capacity?

Cognizably, obtaining good grades enable us to proceed to a next level of formal education. Thus, we gallantly abide to this as corresponds in our pursuit of increasing our probability of moving up. Truly, acquiring a passing grade can be a working method in the student’s attempt of shooting their target, but not the bull’s eye. Submitting all the school works as it is, passing examinations, at least, to its required passing score, as long as being able to step up to the next level will be enough and possible for them. In certain cases, students who happened to be achievers, acquire a lot of achievements and recognition, for it is the hard-earned of their hard work, products of their labor, and the fruits of their trees.

Grade is just a number, yes. It does not define student’s intelligence and who we are as a member of the society, but, at some point, grades determine what kind of a student you are since you’re the maker of your own grade. Also, it is a manifestation of your endeavours and willingness to pursue the best of your ambitions through doing your responsibilities and obligations as a student. Indeed, it is a matter of honing potentials.

Enough is good; however, if you believe you are capable of building the best of you, you shall seek for the best as an exchange of your academic struggles. To highlight, what is beautiful attracts but what is sublime transcends the beautiful, and inspires awe rather than simple delight. Intelligence will serve as an indicator of a student’s academic triumph, but it will not stop a learner who is passionate and determined. As such, try not to settle for less, aim for more. As a maker of your grade, make your target a bull’s eye. At the end of the day, as the adage would state, “The end will speaks at itself”.
