The Municipal Health Office (MHO) of Lebak urges the public to raise awareness about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) after recording 19 cases in 2025โ a 217% increase compared to the 2024 report with 6 cases.
In the public advisory report, the MHO stated that the number of cases this year has risen to 19, compared to the previous year.
โHIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. Without treatment, it can lead to AIDS, which makes the body susceptible to life-threatening infections,โ the MHO explained through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention data.
Moreover, the MHO shared the primary modes of HIV transmission.
According to the MHO, HIV is transmitted through: โunprotected sexual contact (vaginal, a**l, or oral) with a person who has HIV; sharing contaminated needles; and mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.โ
Meanwhile, the agency urges the public to take proactive measures to protect their health and the health of the community by utilizing accessible services.
โThe Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Lebak offers HIV awareness services (free and confidential), including the availability of condoms, free HIV testing, and free testing for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs),โ the advisory explained.
โDo not let fear or stigma stop you from seeking information and services. HIV is a manageable condition with treatment,โ the RHU concluded in a call to action against HIV.
