Why Is Iloilo Called the City of Love?

Long before the nickname became popular, Iloilo was already living it.
In history, Ilonggos were known for malasakit, gentle speech, and respectful ways — from the old plazas and churches, to homes where courtesy mattered more than noise.

Love here was never loud.
It showed in how people treated guests,
in how communities cared for one another,
and in a culture that valued kindness over pride.

That’s why City of Love isn’t just branding.
It’s a reflection of a place where history taught people to love quietly, deeply, and sincerely.

Apang sa daku nga Panay, isa lang gid ini ka pahanumdom:

Sa sini nga Bag-ong Tuig, ubas man ukon wala,
pili-a ang pag-uswag, pagpili sang husto, kag paghigugma nga matuod.

How do Ilonggos welcome the New Year?

Traditionally, Ilonggos welcome the New Year at home, with family gathered closely together. Long before grand fireworks and public countdowns, the focus was always salubong sang pamilya — elders, parents, and children sharing the same table as the year turns.

🏠 Family-centered salubong — staying indoors, waiting for midnight together, believing that beginning the year as one household brings harmony for the months ahead.
🍽️ Masaganang handa, pero practical — food prepared according to means: rice, kakanin, fruits, and shared dishes, not for display, but for sustenance and gratitude.
🍇 Pamahiin with a smile — round fruits, coins in pockets, and small gestures done lightly, passed down more as tradition than superstition.
🎆 Tahimik nga kalipay — celebration marked by modest noise, simple fireworks, and community sounds, not competition.
🙏 Panalangin kag pasasalamat — a short prayer before or after midnight, thanking God for protection and asking for health, peace, and enough for the coming year.

Because in Panay, the New Year has never been about excess.
It has always begun at home, with family, humility, and faith.
