Staff Sergeant **Cesar R. Barlas PN(M)** served as Team Leader of Team I, 2nd Platoon, 61st Force Reconnaissance Company, Force Reconnaissance Group, Philippine Marine Corps, during a combat operation against more or less 20 members — including key leaders — of the Sub-Regional Military Area 4E (SRMA4E), Bienvenido Valleber Command, KLG-South, in Sitio Kabuyoan, Brgy. Mainit, Brooke’s Point, Palawan on September 3, 2020.
During the encounter, SSgt Barlas and his team advanced to within 10 meters of the enemy position. Upon identifying a critical enemy security post that posed a serious threat to advancing troops, he made the courageous decision to assault it alone. Firing at enemy forces, he stormed a nipa hut where an enemy leader was positioned. In the intense firefight against about five enemies, he neutralized three — including two high-value targets — before he was fatally wounded. His actions shattered enemy command and forced them to retreat in disarray.
Because of his decisive bravery, the enemy encampment was left vulnerable, allowing the platoon to advance, seize key terrain, overwhelm enemy forces, and save the lives of fellow Marines. SSgt Barlas gave his life for his comrades and for the protection of Palawan against Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) influence.
In recognition of his heroism, the Provincial Government of Palawan declared September 3 as **“SSgt Cesar R. Barlas Day”** and established a memorial marker in his honor — ensuring his sacrifice will inspire future generations
