Much has been said online about the nickel mining project in Dinapigue, Isabela. Let us set the record straight.
Dinapigue Mining is a responsible mining operation that has received full approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This approval followed a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment and exhaustive consultations with host communities, ensuring that the voices of those most affected were heard.
Verily, the people of Dinapigue, their local government, as well as national regulators were fully informed of both the risks and the mine projectβs opportunities. After a thorough review, the stakeholders all agreed, with strict environmental safeguards in place, that the project could proceed.
The mine is located in a mineral reservation identified and designated by law, NOT within a protected forest. In fact, the government itself declared the area open for mining because of the viable nickel reserves that can be extracted from that area. Dinapigue Mining Corp., as a contractor, committed to extract this strategic mineral with minimal environmental impact and in full compliance with all regulations.
The mining footprint is small, and the company is required to practice progressive rehabilitation. In fact, over 37,000 native trees have already been planted to date. The DENR closely monitors this as part of its robust regulatory framework.
If the people of Dinapigue who live closest to the project and understand its day-to-day realities have chosen to support it, we must respect their voice. The mine brings real, tangible opportunities for the people of Dinapigue: livelihood, education, health services, and long-term community development.
We urge the public and the media to approach these discussions with balance and factual grounding. Irresponsible reporting and emotional clickbait may drive engagement, but they also risk spreading misinformation and inciting unnecessary outrage or cancel culture, at the expense of communities working hard to uplift themselves.
Let Dinapigue chart its own future. Letβs support mining done right.
