What started as a simple school garden project blossomed into a heartfelt gesture of appreciation when Grade 12 HUMSS students from Kalinga State University Laboratory High School surprised their utility worker with a grocery package worth โฑ2,000.
As part of their Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship subject under Ma'am Emalyn Puyoc, the class maintained a vegetable garden, eventually harvesting and selling their produce. But instead of spending their earnings on themselves, the students chose to honor someone who quietly supports their daily school life โ Ma'am Genevieve, the utility worker at the Laboratory High School building.
"Dytuy po ngyket bassit lang po nga pasasalamat mi kinka," said HUMSS student representative Nathaniel Tayaban. "Permi dakkel ti panagyaman mi po kanyam nga mangsigsiguru nga adda ti lugar nga nadalus nga pagiskwelaan mi nga estudyante. Agyaman kami po kinka."
The students used their earnings to purchase groceries and daily essentials, which they presented as a surprise. Overwhelmed with emotion, Ma'am Genevieve expressed her gratitude through tears.
"Haan ku inexpect dytuy," she said. "Thank you estudyante ta imparikna yu ti kastuy kanyak. Shows nga God is good talaga."
Teacher Emalyn Puyoc commended the class for their decision. "This is what community engagement truly means โ going beyond the classroom to practice empathy, solidarity, and social responsibility."
