Binnadang Unites Cordillera: Regional Health Conference Ignites Collaboration, Spotlights Emerging Research Excellence
By: Raenuel Belinan
Baguio City, Philippines – United by the potent spirit of "Binnadang" – a term symbolizing unity and cooperation – the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) officially commenced its 13th Regional Health Research Conference, on June 19, 2025. Held at the Verbist Hall of Saint Louis University (SLU) in Baguio City, the two-day event (June 19-20) has gathered 180 researchers, institutional representatives, and esteemed guests, all committed to fostering collaborative health initiatives under the overarching theme, “Binnadang for One Health.”
The conference serves as a critical platform to strengthen and sustain a robust regional health research system, uniquely tailored to address the diverse health challenges prevalent in the Cordillera region. A primary objective is to champion evidence-based health policies and interventions that are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and deeply responsive to the unique needs of indigenous and marginalized communities.
By convening key stakeholders from academia, government agencies, and research organizations, the event acts as a powerful catalyst for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building, ultimately aiming to significantly improve health outcomes across the region. Moreover, the conference directly supports the strategic goals of the Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC): enhancing research productivity, facilitating the crucial translation of research findings into practical policy and clinical practice, and mobilizing vital resources for health development. Ultimately, it empowers local researchers and institutions to contribute meaningfully to the holistic "One Health" approach, which intricately integrates human, animal, and environmental well-being.
Dr. Nancy A. Bantog, Regional Director of DOST-CAR, underscored the pivotal role of science and innovation in shaping a healthier future during her address. She passionately urged attendees to carry the spirit of "Binnadang" beyond the conference halls. "Let us each do our part and be inspired to collaborate so that together, we can create a healthier world where the entire ecosystem thrives and not just survives,” Bantog emphasized, her words resonating with the collaborative ethos of the gathering.
A highlight of the morning session was the engaging 3-Minute Pitch Competition, skillfully moderated by Dr. Rufina Abul and Mr. Patrick Santiago. This lively competition provided a dynamic stage for emerging researchers and institutions to showcase their innovative health research ideas, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and inspiring future collaborations. Following the keynote, representatives from the consortium’s 29 member institutions took a collective Pledge of Commitment, reaffirming their unwavering dedication to advancing health research and development within the region.
Amidst the collaborative spirit and intellectual exchange of the conference, a group of dedicated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Level 3 students guided by their research adviser, Daphne Divine Delson, from Saint Tonis College, Inc. College of Nursing (STCI-CON) brought home significant accolades, underscoring the promising future of health research in the Cordillera. Their compelling research, titled "Lived Experiences of Spouses Caring for Adult with Heart Conditions in Tabuk City, Kalinga," captivated attendees and judges alike, earning them two prestigious awards and a Plaque of Recognition for their institution.
The presenting team members – Jovan Vicente (who served as the group's representative), Girlie Valdez, Jemilyn Wayet, Shanelle Yambao, and Dynah Yaun – delivered an insightful study that delved into the profound realities and challenges faced by spouses serving as primary caregivers for individuals with heart conditions in Tabuk City. Their work shed crucial light on a vital, yet often overlooked, aspect of community health and family dynamics.
The team's meticulous efforts were recognized with the "Best Infographics" award, a testament to their innovative and remarkably clear visual communication of complex research data. Further solidifying the impact and resonance of their study, they also secured the highly coveted "People's Choice Award - Research Poster Student Category." This particular award reflected widespread appreciation and recognition from their peers and other congress participants, highlighting the study's relevance and accessibility.
In a proud moment reflecting their outstanding contribution to health research, Saint Tonis College, Inc. was also presented with a well-deserved Plaque of Recognition. Other vital members of the research team who contributed to the success of this impactful project include Aj Vinluan, Aira Wacdagan, Xyprince Tiggangay, Melowin Yac-ao, and Rizza Villalada.
