Speleothems are mineral formations that occur in caves as a result of various geological processes. They form as water containing dissolved minerals drips, flows, or seeps through the cave ceiling or walls. As the water evaporates or loses carbon dioxide, the minerals precipitate out and gradually build up over time, creating stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and other cave formations. ๐
Stalactites and stalagmites are the two most common types of dripstone speleothems. Over time, drip by drip, stalactites grow downward from a cave's ceiling or ledge.
