A calm and stunning sight: morning mists drifting over the Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatland.

The Leyte Sab-a Basin Peatlands is a vast wetland ecosystem known for its rich biodiversity, carbon-storing peat soils, and calm, mist-covered landscapes. It plays a vital role in flood control, climate regulation, and supporting local wildlife and communities.

The peatland spans across parts of the municipalities of Alangalang, Santa Fe, and San Miguel in Leyte and forms one of the two major confirmed peatland areas in the Philippines.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 | President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., together with DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, and DPWH 8 Regional Director Edgar Tabacon, inspected the San Juanico Bridge this Friday, December 12, following the completion of its ₱1.1-billion strengthening works to accommodate heavier vehicles. The iconic bridge is now open to vehicles weighing up to 15 tons in two-way traffic, with proposals to increase this to a 30-ton one-way scheme during nighttime to improve mobility for larger trucks and equipment.

To recall, the 2.16-km bridge had been under a strict 3-ton load limit since May 15, 2025, due to major superstructure damage. -Tacloban City Information Office

15 tons will be allowed to pass by San Juanico Bridge as announced by Leyte Gov. Jericho Icot, Chairman of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in Eastern Visayas.

They will be testing it tomorrow just in time for Friday, December 12, of which Pres. Bongbong Marcos is expecting to visit.

After several months of helping commuters and cargo operators affected by the San Juanico Bridge load limit, the Office of Civil Defense has officially ended its Libreng Sakay / free RoRo service.

The program began last June after the bridge was placed under a strict 3-ton load limit due to structural deterioration. Heavy vehicles and cargo trucks were no longer allowed to cross, prompting the government to launch a free RoRo service between Basey, Samar and Tacloban City to keep goods and essential supplies moving.
For over six months, Libreng Sakay became a vital lifeline for travelers, workers, and the business sector—minimizing delays and ensuring the steady flow of food, fuel, and medical supplies across Leyte and Samar.

Thank you to the OCD, NDRRMC, and all partners who kept Eastern Visayas connected during this challenging period.
