Mayor Says Causeway Project Set for Re-Bidding
TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines (Dec. 24, 2025) — In a press conference this month, City Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez confirmed that, based on information he has gathered, the Tacloban Causeway Project is now being prepared for re-bidding, although he did not provide specific details on the schedule or reasons behind the move.
In a brief statement, Mayor Romualdez said the rebidding process is underway “as per the information available to me,” but he declined to elaborate further on timelines or contract status, saying only that stakeholders are monitoring developments closely.
The Tacloban Causeway Project is a major infrastructure initiative of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) designed to connect Tacloban City proper to Barangay San Jose across Cancabato Bay. The multi-billion-peso project involves the construction of a four-lane road embankment spanning approximately 2.56 kilometers, including a central bridge section and features such as separate bike lanes, sidewalks, concrete canals, and wave deflectors to protect against tidal action.
Officials have said the causeway will significantly reduce travel time between the city center and the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport from around 45 minutes to roughly 10 minutes, while also serving as a potential storm surge protection structure for surrounding communities.
Previous contracts for the works had been awarded and portions of the project commenced, but reports suggest legal or administrative issues may have prompted the decision to re-bid the contract. Mayor Romualdez noted there is limited information at this time, and the City Government continues to coordinate with national agencies for updates.
