*Typhoon Ragasa Update*
Typhoon Ragasa, also known as Typhoon Nando, has been affecting the northern parts of the Philippines, particularly in Luzon. As of September 21, the typhoon had sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kph. According to PAGASA, the Philippines' weather bureau, storm signals as high as Signal No. 4 were raised in parts of Cagayan, Isabela, and Ilocos Norte.
*Current Weather Situation*
However, as of today, September 25, the focus has shifted to Severe Tropical Storm "Opong" (BUALOI), located 465 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. This storm has maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center and gustiness up to 135 km/h, moving west northwestward at 20 km/h. The southwest monsoon is affecting the western section of the country.
*Impact and Precautions*
The impact of Typhoon Ragasa was significant, with over 20,000 people taking shelter in safer buildings. Heavy rainfall was predicted, with up to 500 millimeters of rain expected in some areas within three days, increasing the risk of deadly landslides and rivers spilling over. Farms in Isabela could lose millions of pesos in crops.
*Forecast*
For today, September 25, the forecast indicates:
- Stormy weather in Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, and Samar due to STS Opong, with possible floods or landslides.
- Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Metro Manila, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and other areas due to the southwest monsoon.
- Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms in the rest of Luzon and Mindanao.
*Government Response*
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has pledged emergency funds and sent 5,000 troops to help with rescue work. The Philippine Red Cross has also sent water treatment units and first aid supplies.
