ABUYOG LGU
We feel the need to speak up about what happened during the Buyogon Festival on August 27, particularly the treatment of two members of the press who were there to do their jobs: Ronnie Yanuario of Magik FM Tacloban and The Vanguard, and Rolly Magallanes, reporter of The Vanguard.
Both were there as legitimate members of the media, covering the festival and bringing information to the public. Unfortunately, instead of being treated with professionalism and respect, they were allegedly harassed and subjected to remarks that questioned their legitimacy as journalists.
To the videographer hired by the LGU of Abuyog: we understand that everyone has a role to play during an event. But that role does not give anyone the right to belittle, insult, embarrass, or question the dignity and professionalism of members of the press.
Let us make one thing clear: Ronnie Yanuario and Rolly Magallanes are legitimate journalists and not vloggers.
They were there to cover the event, document what was happening, and perform their responsibilities as members of the press. Like everyone else doing their work, they deserve to be treated with basic courtesy and respect.
If there were concerns regarding accreditation, access, or the way the coverage was being conducted, these could have been raised and discussed properly. There was no need to demean or embarrass journalists who were simply performing their duties.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are simply asking for respect.
And to the LGU of Abuyog, we sincerely hope that you will look into what happened and remind everyone working for or on behalf of the local government that members of the press are not adversaries. Journalists are partners in informing the public.
We show up. We work. We cover events. We ask questions. We report.
And we serve the public through our profession.
We take journalism seriously, and we will not allow anyone to diminish the dignity of the profession simply by questioning who we are.
We know who we are.
We are journalists. We are members of the press. And we deserve to be treated with respect.
