When I left my corporate job years ago, one of the first things I promised myself was:
โOkay lang. Iโll continue paying my SSS on my own.โ
Pero ayunโฆ months passed, then years.
Guess what I didnโt do? ๐
Yup. Pay my SSS.
โKasi akala ko okay lang.โ
When youโre an employee, automatic lahat... your HR does the remittance, your payslip shows the deduction, and you never really think about it.
Pero nung naging self-employed ako, biglang naging optional sa isip ko yung SSS.
I told myself, โBabalikan ko โyan pag okay na cashflow.โ Pero ang totoo? I just didnโt prioritize it.
Until one day, reality hit.
I logged in account sa SSS Portal... out of curiosity.
Last contribution? 3 years ago.
Status: Inactive.
Loan: Past due.
Penalties: โฑx,###.xx ๐ญ
Then I realizedโฆ I lost my continuity... meaning, the years I stopped paying wonโt count sa total years required for pension.
Ngayon na inayos ko na ulit at inaaral ko nang mabuti, medyo nakakagulat lang...
So eto ng nga, from employee to self-employed
_______________
โฑ5,000.
Pinakamataas naman (Maximum Salary Credit) ay โฑ35,000.
Kapag self-employed ka, ikaw lahat ang magbabayad ng 15%.
Kaya kung gusto mong maghulog sa pinakamataas:
โฑ35,000 ร 15% = โฑ5,250, dagdagan mo lang ng โฑ30 (para sa EC)
โฑ5,280/month ang total hulog mo.
_______________
My SSS Journey:
๐ฉโ๐ผ Age 22โ29 โ Employed, salary โฑ20,000
๐ซ Age 30โ32 โ Walang hulog (nakalimutan ko na)
๐ช Age 33โ60 โ Self-employed, maghuhulog ng โฑ5,280/month
So total 34 years akong maghuhulog if I want โฑ5,280/month contribution sa SSS.
_______________
Formula:
โฑ300 + (20% ร AMSC) + (2% ร AMSC ร (CYS โ 10))
Important: For the basic SSS pension, the AMSC cap is โฑ20,000, even if you pay at โฑ35,000. Anything above โฑ20,000 goes to the MySSS Pension Booster (MPF) โ a separate savings/investment fund.
So, using my record:
AMSC = โฑ20,000 (capped)
CYS = 34 years
โฑ300 + (โฑ4,000) + (โฑ400 ร 24) = โฑ13,900/month (estimated).
โ
This is the realistic pension based on the 2025 SSS computation rules.

Even after 34 years of consistent payment...
the estimated monthly pension is only around โฑ13,900.
And thatโs already near the top tier.
If your income is โฑ15,000/month, your pension would be roughly โฑ6,300.
No wonder many retirees still work...
SSS is not a retirement plan.
Itโs just somehow a safety net, and a thin one.

Thatโs why I decided to:
โ
Continue paying SSS as self-employed kasi baka maging okay naman in the future. Also for other benefits like, Sickness Benefit, Maternity Benefit, Disability Benefit, Death Benefit, Funeral Benefit, Unemployment Benefit, Employeesโ Compensation (EC) Benefit, and Loan
โ
Contribute at the max MSC (โฑ35K... for MPF growth)
โ
Build my own retirement fund.... investments, insurance, savings.. magbusiness
Because โmay SSS naman akoโ sounds safeโฆ
until you see the actual math.
Talagang hangga't kaya mag invest...
