When I left my corporate job years ago, one of the first things I promised myself was:

โ€œOkay lang. Iโ€™ll continue paying my SSS on my own.โ€

Pero ayunโ€ฆ months passed, then years.
Guess what I didnโ€™t do? ๐Ÿ˜…
Yup. Pay my SSS.

โ€œKasi akala ko okay lang.โ€

When youโ€™re an employee, automatic lahat... your HR does the remittance, your payslip shows the deduction, and you never really think about it.

I told myself, โ€œBabalikan ko โ€™yan pag okay na cashflow.โ€ Pero ang totoo? I just didnโ€™t prioritize it.

Until one day, reality hit.

I logged in account sa SSS Portal... out of curiosity.

Last contribution? 3 years ago.
Status: Inactive.
Loan: Past due.
Penalties: โ‚ฑx,###.xx ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Then I realizedโ€ฆ I lost my continuity... meaning, the years I stopped paying wonโ€™t count sa total years required for pension.

So eto ng nga, from employee to self-employed

_______________

Pinakamataas naman (Maximum Salary Credit) ay

โ‚ฑ35,000 ร— 15% = โ‚ฑ5,250, dagdagan mo lang ng โ‚ฑ30 (para sa EC)

5,280/month ang total hulog mo.

_______________

My SSS Journey:
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ Age 22โ€“29 โ€“ Employed, salary โ‚ฑ20,000
๐Ÿšซ Age 30โ€“32 โ€“ Walang hulog (nakalimutan ko na)
๐Ÿ’ช Age 33โ€“60 โ€“ Self-employed, maghuhulog ng โ‚ฑ5,280/month

So total 34 years akong maghuhulog if I want โ‚ฑ5,280/month contribution sa SSS.

_______________

Formula:
โ‚ฑ300 + (20% ร— AMSC) + (2% ร— AMSC ร— (CYS โ€“ 10))

Important: For the basic SSS pension, the AMSC cap is โ‚ฑ20,000, even if you pay at โ‚ฑ35,000. Anything above โ‚ฑ20,000 goes to the MySSS Pension Booster (MPF) โ€” a separate savings/investment fund.

So, using my record:

AMSC = โ‚ฑ20,000 (capped)

CYS = 34 years

13,900/month (estimated).

โœ… This is the realistic pension based on the 2025 SSS computation rules.

Even after 34 years of consistent payment...
the estimated monthly pension is only around โ‚ฑ13,900.

And thatโ€™s already near the top tier.
If your income is โ‚ฑ15,000/month, your pension would be roughly โ‚ฑ6,300.

No wonder many retirees still work...
SSS is not a retirement plan.
Itโ€™s just somehow a safety net, and a thin one.

Thatโ€™s why I decided to:
โœ… Continue paying SSS as self-employed kasi baka maging okay naman in the future. Also for other benefits like, Sickness Benefit, Maternity Benefit, Disability Benefit, Death Benefit, Funeral Benefit, Unemployment Benefit, Employeesโ€™ Compensation (EC) Benefit, and Loan
โœ… Contribute at the max MSC (โ‚ฑ35K... for MPF growth)
โœ… Build my own retirement fund.... investments, insurance, savings.. magbusiness

Because โ€œmay SSS naman akoโ€ sounds safeโ€ฆ
until you see the actual math.

Talagang hangga't kaya mag invest...

Share this with a friend whoโ€™s self-employed or freelancing.
Letโ€™s stop pretending โ€œokay na โ€™yanโ€... and start planning smarter. ๐Ÿ™

*Estimates are based on official SSS formulas (RA 11199, 2025 rate). Actual benefits depend on verified records and prevailing policies at the time of retirement.

๐Ÿ“ Disclaimer: This post is based on my own study and understanding of SSS rules.
Youโ€™re encouraged to verify and compute your own based on your actual records.

If thereโ€™s anything to correct, feel free to share,,,, so everyone can learn together. ๐Ÿค

Out of nowhere, I received a message...

"hello question po sa tithes. Mag tithes po ba sa gross income before taxes or sa net po?โ€

Honestly, thatโ€™s a fair question.
Weโ€™ve all probably thought about it... especially when expenses keep adding up faster than income does.

Hereโ€™s how I see it:
The 10% isnโ€™t a strict rulebook line... itโ€™s more of a starting point.
Itโ€™s not meant to guilt you, itโ€™s meant to grow you.
It helps us practice trust.. the kind that says, โ€œGod, Youโ€™re my source.โ€

Some people give from their gross, others from their net.
The point isnโ€™t whoโ€™s โ€œmore right.โ€

Itโ€™s about giving whatโ€™s first in your heart, not whatโ€™s left.

And if 10% feels impossible right now, start with what you can.
The Bible says,

โ€œEach of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.โ€ - 2 Corinthians 9:7

So whether itโ€™s 10%, 5%, or even 2%.. give it cheerfully.

Because Godโ€™s not looking at the percentage... Heโ€™s looking at the posture.

And who knows?
As your faith and capacity grow, maybe one day youโ€™ll go beyond 10%.

Not because you have to... but because you want to.
Because giving will start to feel less like losing,
and more like worship.
