Brass tap spindle or faucet valve insert, a key component found inside traditional compression-style taps (water faucets).

Description:

Material: Brass (golden-yellow metal).

Top Part: A T-shaped handle that allows the user to turn the valve open or closed.

Middle Section: A threaded body and a hexagonal nut for tightening it into the tap housing.

Markings: Stamped with size marking β€œΒ½β€ (indicating Β½ inch) and possibly a manufacturer code.

Bottom Part: A rubber washer (black) at the tip, which presses against a valve seat to stop water flow.

Function:

When the handle is turned, the spindle moves up or down:

Turning clockwise β€” compresses the washer onto the valve seat, stopping water flow.

Turning counterclockwise β€” lifts the washer, allowing water to flow.

This component is essential for controlling water in manual faucets, garden taps, and similar plumbing fittings.

Waste pipe connection process

10/10/2025

10/10/2025

For a 4β€³ (100 mm) waste pipe to a pit latrine you should aim for a fall between 1/8″–1/4β€³ per foot (β‰ˆ 1.0%–2.0% slope).
If the pipe is part of a pour-flush / latrine connection you’ll commonly see recommendations up to 1:40 (β‰ˆ2.5%) for short runs.

What those numbers mean

1/8β€³ per ft = β‰ˆ 3.175 mm per 0.305 m β‰ˆ 10.4 mm per metre (β‰ˆ 1.0%).

1/4β€³ per ft = β‰ˆ 6.35 mm per 0.305 m β‰ˆ 20.8 mm per metre (β‰ˆ 2.1%).

1:40 = 25 mm per metre (β‰ˆ 2.5%).

Practical guidance / why choose a value

Too flat β†’ solids and paper may settle and block the pipe.

Too steep β†’ liquids outrun solids, which may leave solids behind and still cause blockages.
For 4β€³ drains most plumbers aim between 1/8β€³ and 1/4β€³/ft; 1/4β€³/ft is a safe practical target for short runs into a pit.

Ventilation pipe (SVP) notes when combined with the waste run

The vent pipe itself should be vertical wherever possible and must terminate above the roofline (guidance commonly 300–500 mm above the highest roof point). Do not let the vent dip and trap water; if a sloped run is unavoidable, slope it back toward the drain at ~1/8β€³/ft so condensate drains back.

For ventilated improved pit latrines there are specific design guides (vent diameter and insect-screening) β€” many field guides recommend a 100 mm vent for community / household latrines, but check local practice/standards.

Installation tips (quick checklist)

Keep the waste run free of sags or offsets where solids can collect.

Provide a continuous, consistent fall from the fixture to the pit.

Fit an insect screen or fly-trap on the top of the vent (common practice for VIP latrines).

If you must join vent and waste horizontally (combined system), follow local plumbing code for maximum/minimum pitches and maximum distances to vent β€” codes vary; when in doubt, use 1/4β€³/ft for the waste and keep the vent vertical.
