I need to get this off my chest.
Lately, I keep seeing posts online making it look like being a Virtual Assistant is the easiest way to get rich quick. You know the ones: “work from anywhere, earn dollars, live your dream life.” And now there’s even a viral story going around about a girl who supposedly started out as a VA at 12 years old back in 2010 and is now a billionaire. A billionaire! As if that’s even possible.
And honestly? It makes me cringe. Because while I love what I do and I’m grateful for the opportunities freelancing has given me, this job is not as easy as social media makes it look. It’s not some magical shortcut to success. It’s work. Real, often exhausting, sometimes anxiety-inducing work.
Here’s the reality people don’t see:
- You don’t land high-paying clients overnight. It takes time, skills, and years of experience.
- You deal with inconsistent income. One month is abundant, the next is dry.
- You don’t get company benefits or paid leave. If you’re sick, you don’t get paid.
- You handle multiple roles and high expectations, sometimes across different time zones.
And that “freedom” people keep talking about? It comes with a cost: pressure, competition, and the constant fear of what happens if you lose a client.
Don’t get me wrong, being a VA has its rewards. It can be fulfilling, flexible, and even life-changing. But I just wish people would stop overselling it as if it’s the easiest way to get rich. Because it’s not. Behind every VA who makes it look effortless, there are countless sleepless nights, missed weekends, and a lot of unseen hard work.
So yeah… being a VA can be worth it. But let’s stop painting it as all rainbows and roses. People deserve the truth.
End rant.
