# Nigerian General's Widow Rescued After Husband Dies in Captivity

A family's ordeal has taken a bittersweet turn: while retired Maj Gen Rabe Abubakar's wife, Amina, has been rescued after weeks in captivity, her husband never made it out alive.

The couple was kidnapped at the end of May from Katsina state in northwestern Nigeria. During the past month, the family endured anguish—a video even emerged of the elderly couple pleading for their freedom, asking authorities to release detained bandits in exchange for their lives. Tragically, Maj Gen Abubakar died in captivity just this past weekend, apparently from complications related to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Days later, Nigerian troops located Amina during a rescue operation. Though she was shot by her captors as they fled, she survived and is now receiving medical care in a military hospital.

This tragedy reflects a harsh reality in northwestern Nigeria, where criminal gangs known as "bandits" routinely kidnap people for ransom, steal livestock, and attack villages. The security crisis has claimed many lives and left families torn apart—the Abubakar family's experience is just one among many.

The military has vowed to continue pursuing the kidnappers.
