ATTENTION

On Sunday, June 7, students all over PUP Branch and Campuses have discovered several Facebook and Instagram accounts using the exact version of their name.

The anomaly was initially pointed out by Tug-ani, a campus publication of the University of the Philippines - Cebu. This is after they discovered accounts named after of the arrested activists during anti-terrorism protests on Friday, June 5. Since then, students from different universities across the country have reported similar cases.

More victims of fake duplicate accounts have resurfaced online, some even have 2 or more duplicate accounts. At first, the incident is thought only limited to activists, journalists, and politically vocal accounts are now proven wrong since other duplicate accounts reported across the country are either non-activists and apolitical active Facebook users and posts.

While we need to stay vigilant and informed, we also need to know how we can help report these accounts. Please see the image attached to this post for instructions.

We would also like to call the attention of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Taguig Campus administration, student council, and student organizations to help protect the students from an implication that this could be used to silence, harm, intimidate, threat our students, and even use to spread false information online under their name.

If you are the victim of this duplicate fake accounts and happens to receive any messages of threat or intimidation, please do not hesitate to contact us or your student organization so we can collect this information and conduct an investigation.

"There is nothing new in this attack. Keen observers of the increasingly deteriorating state of press freedom in the country were not surprised. In the context of the Duterte administration’s weaponizing the public health emergency to further its goal of controlling information and public opinion, Parlade’s use of the ABS-CBN issue is just one more demonstration of its determination to silence dissent and free expression."

STATEMENT OF THE PUBLICATION:

The Chronicler, as the official student publication of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Taguig Branch joins the rank of student publications, journalists, and media practitioners in the country in condemning the cease and desist order of the National Telecommunications Commission to shut down the television and radio stations of ABS-CBN despite assuring Congress that they will issue a provisional permit to network.

The issued order is an attack on press freedom - now more than ever as the whole nation needed access to relevant information on public safety, health crisis management, and the government's action planning in this fight on the pandemic. The unnecessary shutdown limits Filipino people to have the freedom to access where they can get this information from.

On top of the attack on the press freedom, the shutdown also displaces the job security of more than 11,000 ABS-CBN employees whose job is already on the line by risking their lives day and night in covering and assisting in providing relevant information on the COVID-19 pandemic that has plagued the country and the rest of the world. This also strips them of their income, leading to economic uncertainties with no contingency plan from the government before acting on removing their livelihood.

Tonight, we make a stand in this inhumane practice of destroying our democracy. We are in solidarity with ABS-CBN and all other networks and media practitioners. We will not be silent and we will not allow the play of the fascist administration to be in place.
