Statement | Journalism’s loyalty is to the people
June 4, 2026
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) joins our colleagues covering the Senate in condemning Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s attacks on the Philippine media.
Marcoleta, during a blue ribbon committee hearing, accused members of the media of being “paid hacks” and claimed that journalists failed to question the move of the “new majority” to cancel a hearing on the flood control corruption scandal.
Marcoleta’s tirades are clear attempts to undermine the public’s trust in the media amid the coverage of intensifying rift between two political camps. Journalists ferret out the truth and convey it to the public. This includes asking questions to whoever needs to be held accountable. Our colleagues in the Senate have been doing exactly what they ought to do.
Portraying the media as partisan only means to distract the public from real issues that should be put into light. Allegations of corruption hurled against either side must be investigated fully. Journalism’s loyalty is to the people, not to any partisan group with vested interests.

We always lose followers when we seriously post about politics (which is no laughing matter, by the way). But as ex-journalists, we always stand with former colleagues who risk much more for much less than your patawang bayaran content creators masquerading as credible information sources.
