15 days before Christmas!

For many autistic individuals, familiar items bring comfort and joy, and for Jacob, his Paw Patrol plushies are always part of every celebration, every routine, every happy moment.

Last night Jacob poured cold water from the refrigerator onto his head not once, but twice.
The first time, I stayed calm and reminded him that it isn’t safe and he can get sick. I asked him to take a bath and thought the lesson was understood… but a few hours later, he did it again.

Moments like this can be tough for both autistic individuals and us parents. Impulsivity, sensory seeking, and difficulty understanding consequences are common behaviors. And honestly, as a mom, I also have limits. I got angry. I scolded him. I took his phone away for a month.

This morning, I sat with Jacob and wrote down questions to help him process what happened. He answered them, and I could see he understood a little better.

We’re still learning, both of us.
Autism is not a straight line. It’s progress, setbacks, patience, and trying again every day.

Throwback to 2012.

This video was taken during Jacob’s summer program at Mb TherapyCenter , a place that played such an important role in his early progress.
Teacher Madel, the teachers, and the whole team poured so much love, patience, and dedication into him.

Looking back at these moments reminds me how far Jacob has come, from a little boy learning step by step…
to the young adult he is today.

We will forever be grateful to the people who helped shape his skills, his confidence, and his world. 💙

Therapy doesn’t “fix” autism,
but it gives children like Jacob the tools to grow, communicate, and shine in their own amazing ways.

Real-life lesson for today: boundaries, choices, and big feelings.

Yesterday at the mall, he went straight to Toys R Us and looked for Paw Patrol again.
But on top of the display, he saw a Sesame Street Big Bird plushie and suddenly he wanted it because he knew I wouldn’t buy Paw Patrol before Christmas,
he started shouting and fake crying, hoping I would give in.
This is a common challenge for many autistic individuals:
managing impulses and dealing with “waiting” can be very difficult.

I explained to him that if I buy the Big Bird plushy
we won’t be able to watch Wicked on Saturday, he had to make a choice.
After many calm talks, he finally understood and followed.
That’s progress. 💛

But when are eating our lunch, he insisted again.
So I tried a new strategy:
I wrote a contract on a table napkin, our promise and agreement,
and asked him to sign it.
Then I told him to write his own contract for me to sign,
saying I will buy his Paw Patrol plushies on Dec 25.
And he did it.😍
Clear rules, written agreements these help him understand.
Every day, we learn and adjust. Every day, we grow together. 💙
