KUYA GOB JUBAHIB, MAO ANG NANGUSOG MAKASULOD ANG DAVAO LIGHT SA DAVNOR
DAVAO del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib has once again called out the attention of Northern Davao Electric Cooperative Inc. (Nordeco) for their inconsistencies and unresolved electric issues, which slows down foreign investments in the area, despite the countless Senate hearings conducted since the first quarter of the year.
In an ambush interview, the official said that it is high time to change their inefficient services and that they are hopeful that their operation will be replaced sooner as the situation can now be tagged as an economic crisis.
"Naa na ta sa 95 percent gain laban sa electric cooperative kay during sa Senate committee hearing sa Congress, nasabtan jud nila ang atong gipaglaban. Nakita nila nga tama ang atoang fight nga adunay tay strong evidence (We have already gained 95 percent support against the electric cooperative because during the Senate committee hearing in Congress, they understood what we are fighting for. They saw that our fight is right and we have strong evidence),” the governor said during the 10th ID Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony last September 15, 2023, at Camp General Manuel T. Yan Sr., Tuboran, Mawab, Davao de Oro.
"Kinahanglan nato ang barato nga kuryente, insaktong supply sa kuryente ug maayong serbisyo sa kuryente. Ang akoang gina-hope is barato nga kuryente para mas daghan pa na mga investor na atong ma-invite para adunay daghang kabag-ohan sa atoang probinsya (We need affordably electricity, proper electricity supply and good electricity service. What I am hoping for is affordable electricity so that we can invite more investors for the development of our province),” he added.
The official also emphasized that he is confident that Nordeco’s operation will be stopped as President Ferdinand "B**gbong" Marcos Jr., senators Imee Marcos, Raffy Tulfo, B**g Go, Win Gatchalian, and Grace Poe and other members of the House of Representatives have expressed their support.
To recall, more than 3,000 people staged a protest rally in Tagum City last March 13, 2023, to voice their complaints about the unbearable power rates and consecutive blackouts. As a result, the cooperative, Jubahib, a representative from the Davao Consumer Movement, and a lawyer from the National Electrification Administration (NEA) attended a joint Senate committee hearing in July 2023, organized by the committees on energy, trade, commerce, and entrepreneurship.
Nordeco, the prime electric supplier to 16 municipalities, two cities, and two provinces – Davao de Oro (former Compostela Valley) and Davao del Norte, has refuted Jubahib's claims, saying that his statements were "baseless and inaccurate".
However, in Jubahib's defense, he called them out as a "fake cooperative" for their poor decision-making for its members. He added that there have been no improvements in the power supply despite Nordeco’s P3.9 billion worth of liabilities and debts worth more than P1 billion to provide submarine cables, which are charged to its consumers.
